His “extraordinary life” has shown us the world, but the 94-year-old filmmaker is now on a mission to save it for the future.

Noted conservationist and filmmaker Sir David Attenborough’s new documentary has landed in Australian cinemas after being delayed by the pandemic.

Coronavirus put a halt on the plans to show David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet in cinemas around the world, but the film is now showing (you can find your local showtime at the film’s website).

The film serves as the 94-year-old’s “witness statement for the natural world,” according to the World Wildlife Fund, which has called it “a powerful first-hand account of humanity’s impact on nature and a message of hope for future generations”.

“I’ve had a most extraordinary life. It’s only now I appreciate how extraordinary,” Sir David says in the film’s trailer, in which he also promises to tell audiences how we can “work with nature rather than against it”.

The WWF produced the film along with Silverback Films.

“There has never been a more significant moment for (Sir David) to share his own story and reflections,” executive producer Colin Butfield said.

“This film coincides with a monumental year for environmental action as world leaders make critical decisions on nature and climate.

“It sends a powerful message from the most inspiring and celebrated naturalist of our time,” Mr Butfield said.

If you see the movie in cinemas before it lands on Netflix later this year, you’ll also be treated to a cinema-exclusive conversation between Sir David and Sir Michael Palin, the British broadcaster and former Monty Python comedian with whom the naturalist shares a “passion for exploring our vast planet and a desire to protect it for future generations”.

Sir David has been vocal about the threat of climate change in recent years, calling on politicians to take their “last chance” to act rather than continue to “neglect long-term problems”.

“This is not only a long-term problem, it is the biggest problem humanity has faced, ever,” Sir David said in an interview with the BBC earlier this year.
