Queensland storms: Brisbane, Logan City suffer power outage
STRONG, dangerous winds and heavy rain is heading for the eastern states while those living in parts of Queensland struggle without power after the vicious storm hit.
SYDNEY, Adelaide and much of Victoria are about to get a battering today with winds of up to 100km/h. That’s enough to fell power lines.
The wild weather comes as thousands of homes were left without power as a vicious storm lashed southeast Queensland last night.
The storm, which hit about 5.30pm, was brief but damaging, with 75km/h winds and heavy rain lashing the region.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a series of severe weather warnings this morning for the eastern states and South Australia.
It said a “vigorous westerly airstream” was moving across SA from the Great Australian Bight, bringing winds of 50-60km/h and gusts in excess of 90km/h coupled with squally showers and thunderstorms. Affected areas included Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Murray Bridge.
The same system will also bring potentially destructive winds to Victoria with gusts at 95km/h in the south west, Mallee, central and northern parts of the state and even as far east as Gippsland.
Melbourne may escape the worst of the winds but gusts of up to 50km/h are a possibility along with heavy rain.
Sydneysiders won’t be so lucky with winds of about 70km/h likely as the day progresses and gusts getting as high as 100km/h. A trough following Monday’s cold front is responsible for the damaging winds which already reached 94km/h in Braidwood in the state’s south.
As the trough travels north, severe winds are likely to extend to coastal areas during the day with Canberra, Nowra and Wollongong affected as well as the harbour city.
The State Emergency Service suggested that cars be moved under cover, loose items outside homes be secured and people stay away from fallen power lines.
Further north, about 10,000 homes were left without power following the severe storm which affected Brisbane, Logan, Redcliffe, Beenleigh as well as Moreton and Bribie islands.
Homes on the Gold Coast were also affected as wild weather lashed the state’s coast.
Power supplier Energex revealed thousands were without power.
At least a dozen homes in Rochedale South, in Brisbane, suffered roof damage with the SES confirming they were attending to several homes in the area, the Courier-Mail reported.
The severe weather also led to several flights between Sydney and Brisbane being cancelled.
