THESE 10 photographs are the cream of the crop in the Sony World Photography Awards — and will leave you breathless.
FROM a Buddhist Institute in China to the deep blue sea of the Indian Ocean, these extraordinary pictures are the definition of otherworldly.
These 10 pictures — from some of the best photographers in the business — are a taste of the incredible talent pool in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.
The 2016 Sony World Photography Awards received a record-breaking number of submissions with 230,103 images from 186 countries, all vying for a shot at winning the major $33,000 cash prize as well as the latest Sony digital imaging equipment.
This year’s submissions saw 33 per cent increase on entries in 2015.
The pictures are as phenomenal as they are diverse, with subjects ranging from grand architecture to captivating underwater shots and sun bears.
Winners and short-listed photographers will also receive international exposure in prestigious magazines, newspapers and websites.
Chair of the professional competition, Zelda Cheatle, said she would be looking for “originality of thought and execution” and “clarity of vision”.
“A good picture always stops you in your tracks,” Ms Cheatle said.
