‘Only in Townsville’: Aussie bloke’s monster catch in Queensland floods

A man has made the most of the devastating floods in north Queensland as the state continues to battle unrelenting deluge.

'Stay Strong': Hundreds Evacuated as Severe Flooding Hits Northern Queensland

One Aussie has found a silver lining to the horrific floods that have rocked the area.

Some parts of Queensland have been hit by more than 1.2m of rain since Saturday, with hundreds of people forced to flee their homes and more than 7000 people left without power.

On a lighter note, a video shared on Facebook shows the wild moment a man catches a massive barramundi, grinning from ear to ear has he hauled it to his car at the Ross River Dam in Townsville.

The fish must have been about a metre-long as it was half the man’s height, as he triumphantly carried his catch through a car park.

Brendan Marolla, who shared the video, was in disbelief over the scenes.

“Only in Townsville, guys, check this out,” he said. “This is at the weir, no it’s not, it’s at the dam.

“Look at this guy — wow. That is decent, man.

“Second day of barra season, he’s got himself a beauty.”

The video has been shared widely with more than three million views.

Viewers saw the lighter side of the situation.

One commenter said: “That’s my mums neighbour, he shared half with her — gotta love them.”

Another wrote: “True legend saving this poor fish from drowning in the floods.”

Others roasted the man, with one saying: “Taking a freshwater barra home for dinner — rookie move.”

Another added: “To big to eat, should have let it go to breed, it’ll taste like crap and probably rubbery, each to their own I guess.”

Others pondered if big fish like that should have been released back into the wild so they can continue to breed.

Marolla spoke to ABC Brisbane after the video began to go viral, saying the fish actually looked bloated and had lost some scales.

He wondered whether it hadn’t been caught but rather may have died after going down the dam’s spillway.

But there was no doubt the man looked pleased with himself.

“This guy walks in front of our car with a massive 1m+ barramundi over his shoulder. He was so content with himself too, what a legend,” Marolla said.

While drenched north Queenslanders try to make the most of the weather after the horrific deluge, the floods have been a disaster for the state.

On Wednesday, a second woman died in the floodwaters with an 82-year-old woman located in a cane paddock at Bemerside near Ingham, the Courier Mail reported.

It’s believed the woman was last seen by a nearby resident at around 6pm on Monday inside a two-storey house.

The neighbour raised fears on Tuesday morning and she was later found by police.

“Tragically, another Queenslander has lost their life in the North Queensland floods,” Premier David Crisafulli said.

“Our hearts are with the family of the elderly woman from Ingham, during this incredibly difficult time.

“We may likely be through the worst of the weather, but dangers remain, and I encourage all Queenslanders to follow the emergency warnings.”

On Sunday, a woman in her 60s died in Ingjam when the rescue boat she was in capsized after hitting a tree.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts rain in Townsville every day for the next seven days.
