Northern NSW to experience flash flooding as thunderstorms develop

A severe weather warning has been issued for one state as thunderstorms move in.

Parts of Victoria facing flash floods

Towns in Northern New South Wales have been issued a severe weather warning as slow-moving thunderstorms develop.

There is potential for localised heavy rainfall to occur on Wednesday afternoon, locations which may be affected include Coonabarabran, Barraba, Quirindi, Baradine, Bendemeer and Tambar Springs.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said the severe thunderstorms are likely to lead to heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding in the next several hours.

The warning comes as much of Victoria has been overwhelmed with heavy rain and flash flooding over the past 48 hours.

Many areas across the state had been on high alert as water levels continued to rise.

On Tuesday, BOM indicated that while the weather was looking to ease-up for much of the state, the severe weather will continue over eastern and northeastern districts, along with a chance of isolated showers in other parts of the state.

As swollen rivers reached their peak, State Emergency Services were said to have responded to 1750 calls since Sunday, 52 of them for flood rescues.

This latest flooding disaster, came 14 months after the deadly October 2022 floods, leading to a visit from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the State Control Centre on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister will fly to Melbourne following a trip to Queensland, where he announced a $20m clean-up program to support recovery efforts from the southeast Queensland storms and ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Mr Albanese said the federal government would “always be ready to support communities, homes and businesses that have been impacted by natural disasters”.
