A 16-year-old US high school junior was in the right place at the right time to capture the spectacular sight at the St Gerard Catholic Church in Louisiana.

The Mirror reports its not the first time Carl Bouley has seen lightning hit the church, saying he “had a hunch” that it would hit again.

“In 2007, on my birthday, it was hit by lightning, too.

“When I saw the conditions with the atmosphere were the same yesterday, I figured, ‘Why not try to record it?’ ”

Moments after he started filming, his predictions came true, and a terrifying bolt struck the spire.

The church was not badly damaged, although the building’s electrical systems were affected.
