Tumbleweeds blow into Melbourne housing estate

Residents in Melbourne’s northwest faced a bizarre sight on Saturday as tumbleweeds piled up in their yards and blanketed their homes.

Residents in a housing estate in northwest Melbourne have been trapped inside after huge amounts of tumbleweeds blanketed their homes and yards.

Heavy winds across the state are believed to be behind the invasion of hairy panic weed.

One resident told Nine News she was scared to open her front door in case the weeds began filling her house.

The weeds have previously swamped other parts of Victoria over the years, practically burying homes at Wangaratta in 2016.

Victorians were warned about heavy winds up to 110km/h in some parts on Saturday.
