THERE’S nothing like a massive thunderstorm to send social media users into a frenzy.

And this one looks spectacular.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for large hailstones, heavy rainfall and damaging winds across coastal New South Wales but a flood of incredible pictures has already hit Twitter as the storm rolls over Sydney.

BoM is warning that the storms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in Sydney as well as Batemans Bay, Bega, Eden, Bombala, Taree, Gosford, Scone, Cessnock and Maitland.

Residents from areas including Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Woy Woy, Scone, Cessnock and Maitland have also been warned to expect damaging winds and large hailstones.

Heavy rain has begun to bucket over central Sydney and emergency services are urging people to stay inside.

A spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology said the strom should pass in the next hour, although there is a chance of a secondary storm heading our way this evening.

Here are some of our favourite pictures from Twitter.
