The earthquake had a depth of 3km and was felt by at least 14 residents across the region, according to Geoscience Australia.

Residents in Douglas Park, near Appin, took to social media to share how they felt the tremors.

“Our whole house shook and there was a huge bang like an explosion”, one resident posted.

Another resident said the “shuddering lasted a lot longer than all the others we’ve felt before”.

Wollondilly mayor Matt Gould said he didn’t personally felt the tremors but residents had reported to him various incidents in the moments after the earthquake struck.

“It seems like in particularly Meangle and Douglas Park it was certainly strong enough, they had things shake a little bit and photos came off the wall,” Mr Gould said.

“It’s really good there does’t seem to be any damage.”

He said while the quake was a bit of “novelty” and “excitement” on a Sunday, it wasn’t the first time the region had been struck in recent years.

“It’s not often but occasionally we do feel them,” Mr Gould said.

“We had one in Appin last year but this one would be the strongest in recent history.

“We’d probably get one every other year.

Appin store owners told NewsCorp Australia there wasn’t much damage to the town.

“There’s been no damage we’ve seen,” one local business owner said, sharing they ”hadn’t felt” a single shudder.

“First we’ve heard of it,” another added.

“We didn’t feel a thing.”

More to come.
