A Gold Coast teenager who was struck by lightning while walking through the school gates can thank one small detail for saving his life.

A Gold Coast teenager was saved by the soles of his shoes when he was struck by lightning, but that didn’t stop his father from giving him a bit of a roasting.

Talyn Rose, 14, was nearly through the front gate of his Robina State High School on Friday morning when lightning hit a nearby pole and travelled through the ground to the point where he was standing.

The shock went through Talyn’s feet and up his body, appearing to exit his shoulder as it knocked him to the ground.

“I noticed when I hit the bitumen but that’s about it,” Talyn told Today.

“It was a really – it felt like a really slow fall. Like I could take in most of my surroundings before I hit the floor.”

Talyn was taken to hospital with burn-like injuries, but was conscious and calm the whole time.

His thick-soled rubber shoes were being credited with preventing further damage.

Of the initial strike, Talyn said: “Everything was numb. I couldn't feel anything. I couldn’t feel any pain. It was all, like, painless, I guess.”

His father managed to provide a bit of levity once the initial shock passed.

“I know his dad when he saw him in hospital asked him why he didn't sidestep it,” mum Michelle Nimmo told the Today show.

Talyn’s sister apparently joined in on the act.

“She tries to plug her phone into me a few times but it doesn't work,” he said.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Sunshine Coast areas later on Tuesday.
