Donald Trump’s administration is loosening regulations restricting the amount of water that can flow from shower heads, after the US President complained about needing his hair to be “perfect”.

The proposal by Department of Energy addresses a pet peeve of Mr Trump’s that he isn’t getting wet enough in the shower – echoing a classic Seinfeld episode about Kramer’s gripes with the apartment building’s “low-flow” shower heads.

According to the Associated Press, the proposal announced Wednesday would loosen a 1992 federal law dictating that new shower heads can’t pour more than 2.5 gallons (9.5 litres) of water per minute.

The Obama administration tweaked the rule to make it 2.5 gallons in total, as newer fixtures often had multiple nozzles.

The Trump administration wants to change the rule to allow each nozzle to spray up to 2.5 gallons.

That means if there are four or five nozzles, there could be up to 10 to 15 gallons (38 to 57 litres) per minute “powering out of the shower head, literally probably washing you out of the bathroom”, Andrew deLaski from energy conservation group Appliance Standards Awareness Project told AP.

“Frankly it’s silly,” he said. “The country faces serious problems. We’ve got a pandemic, serious long-term drought throughout much of the West. We’ve got global climate change. Shower heads aren’t one of our problems.”

Mr Trump, who has made winding back what he views as overly restrictive energy conservation standards a personal mission, addressed the issue in July.

“So showerheads – you take a shower, the water doesn’t come out,” he told reporters at the White House.

“You want to wash your hands, the water doesn’t come out. So what do you do? You just stand there longer or you take a shower longer? Because my hair – I don’t know about you, but it has to be perfect. Perfect.”

Energy Department spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes told AP the 2013 Obama administration’s definition of shower head clashed with the original intention of Congress and American engineering standards.

“The Trump administration wants to let the American people – not Washington bureaucrats – choose what shower heads they have in their homes,” she said.
