Dave Hughes and wife Holly create the perfect emoji for Aussies feeling nonplussed
FROM budgie smugglers to hangovers and meat pies to meat sweats, Dave Hughes is championing a new range of emojis that reflect the way Aussies really speak.
COMEDIAN Dave Hughes and his wife Holly have created an emoji that could be the perfect thing for Australians feeling nonplussed.
Hughes has teamed up with Virgin Mobile in a campaign to highlight the need for more Australian emojis.
As part of that campaign, Hughes said his wife had the idea for the nonplussed emoji — the perfect emoji to use when you’re so surprised and confused you’re not sure how you’re supposed to react.
The nonplussed emoji is one of 20 Australian emojis to come out of the campaign, which found that half of Australians want more emojis that represent our distinct culture.
The list of Aussie emojis include an emoji for budgie smugglers, thongs, a barbecue, the Aboriginal flag, a meat pie and marriage equality.
Speaking about the need for more Australian emojis, Hughes said he was annoyed there wasn’t a fish and chip emoji.
“I’m not the greatest user of emoji in the world, but I definitely use emoji,” Hughes said.
“I’m a thumb up sort of guy. My main romantic interactions is basically by emoji with my wife.
“You can work away from family for a week as long as you constantly send a kiss emoji.”
Virgin Mobile has submitted the 20 emoji suggestions to the Unicode Consortium which overseas the accepted lexicon of emojis.
If the Australian emojis are approved, they will be part of the keyboard update next year.
