Bullitt County grade eight exam from 1912 is surprisingly tricky

An exam from more than 100 years ago has been uncovered and it shows that students back then didn’t have it easy. Can you pass it?

Are you smarter than a Year 8 student?

What about one from more than 100 years ago?

Put yourself to the test with selected questions from a 1912 exam that was used in schools in Bullitt County, Kentucky, US.

The Bullitt County History Museum received a copy of the exam as a donation.

Students in those days were scattered across the county and gathered once or twice a year to take the “Common Exam”.

Scholarships could be won by students who passed the exam and it was a chance for them to go to high school – a rarity for farm children at that time.

Ignored for more than 100 years, the test went viral after it was picked up by US media.

“It’s quite a challenging test,” museum executive director David Strange told the Huffington Post. “I do try to remind everyone it’s a 1912 test and you need to place yourself in that mindset sometimes. I remember having a similar question [as is on the test] when I was in school. I wouldn’t want to take it again.”
