WHAT’S the best way to kick off a new year? For most of us the answer was to download an app.

Apple released its annual app report today which shows that iPhone and iPad users kicked off the year with an app-buying frenzy.

New Year’s Day this year was the biggest single day in sales in the history of the app store and customers spent about $500 million on apps and in-app purchases in the first week of the year.

The app report doesn’t give details of what apps were hot sellers but given the timing lifestyle apps matching New Year’s resolutions seem a good guess.

Last year app developers shared more than $10 billion in revenue from the app store.

The app report highlights the success of the game Crossy Road, created by the Australian app developer Hipster Whale.

Crossy Road was released onto the app store in the last six weeks of the year and has climbed to the top of the app store charts around the world with 14 million downloads.
