Australia’s Tess Coady has missed out on a second medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics after a “scary” moment in the snowboard big air final.

The 21-year-old was sitting in third at the end of the first runs after her silky first jump was given a score of 85 by the judges.

She followed it up with a throwaway wipe-out in her second run where she appeared to launch herself as high as she usually does, getting a score of 29.75.

But in her third and final jump on Tuesday, the Coady slipped at the worst moment just before hitting ramp — ending with a score of 8.50, which was wiped off as athletes are ranked on their best two scores.

“It all came down to that little bobble at the bottom before we saw her hit the jump,” commentators Ryan Tiene and Mitchell Tomlinson said, speaking on Channel 7.

“She lost her edge and was unable to get that snap. When you’re coming into that you want everything to be near perfect.

“And when you don’t get that snap it is so scary.”

However, Coady remained in good spirits after the event saying despite not landing her second and third attempts it was “such a sick day”.

“I’ve never tried that trick in competition. I definitely butchered it pretty hard on the last one. I am really stoked for trying,” she told Channel 7.

PyeongChang 2018 gold medallist Anna Gasser took out the gold for Austria in the event and New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott won silver. Coady finished ninth.

Coady last week won Australia’s first medal of the Games when she stunned the world in the women’s slopestyle final.

Her bronze medal performance created a moment of Australian sporting history never seen previously as she became the first Aussie woman to win a medal in the event.

It was an ultra-impressive performance and she was just as classy off the board when she congratulated her fellow competitors.

The 21-year-old was famously one of the hardluck stories of the 2018 Games when a freak training injury on the eve of the event cost her the chance of being the youngest Australian competing at the PyeongChang Games.

She will leave China with her luck very much reversed.

After the big air event, Coady said it was the best Olympic Games she could have asked for and the party would now be starting.

“This has been unbelievable. So much fun. I have had the best experience,” she said.

“Really looking forward to seeing my family at home. At the same time it is such a shame it has come to an end because it has been the best three weeks.

“I feel so loved and supported by everyone.”
