UFC 180: Mark Hunt makes weight for title shot against Fabricio Werdum
MARK Hunt, after three weeks of pain, was still not smiling when he finally made weight here today in Mexico City for his UFC title shot.
MARK Hunt, after three weeks of pain, was still not smiling when he finally made weight here today in Mexico City - instead obviously unimpressed with his joking rival Fabricio Werdum.
Only a day after interrupting Hunt’s media conference with a small stereo blasting Mexican tunes, Werdum was at it again - producing a faux oxygen mask for the stare down.
Wearing the mask as he faced Hunt, taunting Hunts lack of time to get acclimatized to the altitude, the Brazilian then offered it to over to his unimpressed rival, who threw it on the ground.
The 40-year-old was, however, visibly happier moments earlier when he ended three weeks of torture.
Hitting the scales at 120.2kg - bang on the maximum weight for a title fight - Hunt flexed to the crowd and afterwards thanked God for the opportunity to fight for the interim title.
The moment ended almost a month of pain for the Campbelltown brawler, who at times has fasted for 16 hours, sweated in the sauna and gone without carbs to drop 20kgs.
Brazilian Fabricio Werdum weighed in significantly lighter - at 105kg.
The interim title fight, which airs live on Main Event this Sunday from 2pm, is a huge opportunity for naturalised Australian Hunt - who is looking to become our first UFC champion.
The 40-year-old father-of-six walked to the stage with a small video camera as, out in the crowd, several thousand Mexicans cheered.
“This is a great opportunity and I want to thank God for allowing me to be here,’’ Hunt said.
Werdum, meanwhile, lingered on stage to lead the crowd in song. Only in Mexico
