Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm almost come to blows at UFC weigh-in
THE fight isn’t until Sunday, but there were already explosive scenes between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm at their pre-fight weigh-in.
RONDA Rousey was nice and polite yesterday. Not today.
The Rousey of old returned for this morning’s weigh ins, with the champion almost shoving challenger Holly Holm off the stage at Etihad Stadium.
In a stunning twist from yesterday’s square off at the Ultimate Media Day, Rousey and Holm almost came to blows before 10,000.
As Rousey aggressively moved towards Holm on stage, Holm put her hands up and caught the baddest woman on the planet on the face.
It sparked intense scenes, with Rousey pushing Holm to within centimetres of falling off the stage.
“I just wanted to get in her face,” Rousey told MC Joe Rogan, explaining why she was aggressive towards Holm.
“She’s the one who put her fist on my face. I see her sweet act as fake. It’s fake and you’re going to get it on Sunday.
“I’m going to show you on Sunday why I am the champion.”
Holm had a more light-hearted view on the scenes that erupted just seconds earlier.
Asked by Rogan, Holm replied: “I don’t know, just having a drink, you know,” Holm said.
And Holm made a statement of her own.
“I’m here to shock the world,” she said.
“She’s the brand for everyone but I’m a different fighter.”
It was the third staredown in as many months for the pair, who were remarkably composed yesterday.
Rousey and Holm shook hands and not a word was said.
It was a different story for Joanna Jedrzejczyk (114 pounds) Valerie Letourneau (115) who continued their fierce rivalry before the fans.
The pair again went nose to nose and butted heads in a nasty exchange.
Champion Jedrzejczyk set the scene as she weighed in.
After offering kisses to the crowd and presenting her trademark No.1 signal, Jedrzejczyk soon zoned in on Letourneau.
Jedrzejczyk barely took her eyes off Letourneau as she stripped down to shorts and a top, sparking roars from the crowd.
As she laced her shoes, Jedrzejczyk did not take her eyes off the challenger.
She then stormed across the stage and bent her knees to drop below Letourneau’s outstretched hands and nudged her head.
Asked what she said to Letourneau as they butted heads, Jedrzejczyk replied: “That her lucky day was yesterday and today and tomorrow is my lucky day.
“I am the best, that is all,” Jedrzejczyk added.
Letourneau said “this is the most important fight of my life.
“This is for me, for my brother. I want to make them proud.”
Arguably the biggest roar was for “Super Samoan” Mark Hunt (265) when he hit the stage for the square off with Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (263).
