Alex Chambers joins The Ultimate Fighter
AUSSIE MMA fighter Alex Chambers is about to hit the big time in a new reality show pitting the world’s toughest women against each other.
AUSTRALIA’S Alex Chambers is about to hit the big time as one of the stars of a new reality show that pits the world’s toughest women against each other.
But the self-confessed tomboy, who started karate lessons when she was eight, still enjoys discarding her sweaty gym clothes and putting on makeup, a dress and high heels to hit the town.
The 35-year-old mixed martial artist, who has a science degree and is fascinated by astrophysics, has jetted off to Los Angeles today to walk the red carpet at the premiere of the 20th Ultimate Fighter series.
For Chambers, who is chasing a career in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), it is the chance of a lifetime to win the world championship belt.
The reality show was filmed in Las Vegas and saw Chambers, who hails from Manly, sharing the “fighter’s mansion” with 15 other female strawweight (52kg) fighters.
It is the first all-women’s season of the 20th Ultimate Fighter series, and the winner will earn a UFC contract.
“Fighting is not something I can do for the rest of my life, so at the moment it is my focus,” Chambers, who was given the nickname “Astro Girl” due to her university studies and nimble size, said.
“I still have a few years left.”
To this end she has thrown herself into training six days a week, two to three times each day.
But she believes in moderation, so eats healthily and always allows treats like chocolate to be part of the mix.
“I train hard so there has to be a bit of leeway with what I eat,” she said.
“It’s more of a mentally challenging sport than physically challenging. so I’m constantly battling myself in training.
“I have a boyfriend who is very understanding when I have to travel and most people think it’s cool because I don’t look very scary.”
