Eddie breaks silence on trade mess

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has broken his silence on the club's trade mess.

The Magpies have faced a mountain of backlash throughout the entirety of the Trade Period, and on Thursday night tensions only escalated.

As the clock wound down, the Pies sent several stars out the door with very little coming back in return.

They brought in picks 14, 65, 70 and a future second-rounder, but Adam lost Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom Phillips, Atu Bosenavulagi and picks 26, 33, 39 and 42.

Racing editor Ryan Reynolds wrote: “What’s gone at Collingwood this trade period is nothing short of embarrassing. Can’t sugar coat it."

Speaking on Triple M's Hot Breakfast, Collingwood GM of Football Geoff Walsh addressed the trade decisions, and McGuire answered questions from concerned Collingwood fans.

"It's the toughest thing when you're a supporter, because you love your players and your players love you," McGuire said.

"We got the end of this campaign… and you either say, 'Ok, do you make the moves that need to be made to go through there?'

"These days it's really tough … it's been a very hard year for everybody.

"I hate this period."

After Walsh claimed the Magpies never chased the signature of tall forward Tom Lynch, McGuire quickly corrected him.

"Just to clear that last bit, spoke to him, didn’t go after him," McGuire said.

Lyon says Australia won’t roll India

Test star Nathan Lyon wants to make the most of his one crack at Indian ace Virat Kohli this summer and “get him out cheaply”.
Kohli will only play the opening Test in Adelaide, and Lyon said the Aussies still had a lot of work to do to combat a star-studded Indian outfit.

“It’s disappointing for the series. You want to play against the best players in the world,” Lyon said.

“I believe he is the best player in the world along with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. It’s disappointing but they have still got superstars.

“Look at Pujara, Rahane, and they have also got a couple of young guys coming in. It’s still going to be a massive challenge for us.

“Just because Virat’s not here doesn’t mean we get to hold the trophy up. We’ve still got a lot of work to do, a lot of homework to do.”

Warner to be consulted on selection dilemma

National selector Trevor Hohns has conceded Australian batsman David Warner will be consulted on his opening partner for the upcoming Test series against India.

Young gun Will Pucovski and Queensland's Joe Burns were both names in the 17-man squad on Thursday, and are set to face off for a spot in the starting XI.

“It’s important (Warner) is comfortable as well, provided we are of course, with the person he opens with,” Hohns said.

“We certainly do consult players on such issues.

“Joe Burns is the incumbent … The partnership he formed with David Warner has been instrumental in helping Australia get to the No 1 position in the world Test rankings. We’ll take all that into account.

“But of course it would be nice to have everybody in form right now. We still have those Australia A games to have a look prior to selection for the first Test match.”

Sydney FC stunned by positive COVID-19 test

Sydney FC defender Ryan McGowan has tested positive to COVID-19, leaving him in extreme doubt for the Sky Blues’ AFC Champions League campaign.

In Scotland with his family, McGowan had been due to link up in Doha with the rest of the Sydney squad, who leave Australia on Saturday.

However, the Socceroos defender’s arrival in Qatar will now be delayed at best, and there is every chance he won’t take any part in the remainder of the competition.

Bad day for Aussie tennis stars

It has not been the best day for Australia's tennis stars at the Sofia Open in Bulgaria.

Despite being the sixth-seed for the indoor tournament, John Millman suffered a straight sets defeat to unseeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil in Friday morning's quarter-final.

Meanwhile, after winning the opening set in a tiebreak, No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur was toppled by another unseeded rival in his quarter-final, Italy's Jannik Sinner.

Danish footballer's unfathomable goal

Danish footballer Nicolai Geertsen has pulled off one of the most remarkable goals witnessed in the sport.

During a Danish Cup match, Geertsen attempted a bicycle kick off a corner kick, which struck the crossbar.

He then volleyed the rebound into the goal to complete the brilliant solo effort.

Tiger off to a flyer in The Masters

American golf icon Tiger Woods has started the 2020 Masters in ominous form, managing four birdies in five holes during a classy opening round.

Having won the coveted green jacket in 2019, Woods has had to wait over 18 months to defend his title.

But despite not playing much professional golf in the calendar year, the 44-year-old has started his Masters campaign in fine touch.

Part-way through round one, Woods found himself four shots below par and one shot off the lead after a scintillating start. The highlight was a near hole-in-one on the par-three 16th.

Meanwhile, American rival Bryson DeChambeau got off to a nightmare start in Augusta.

Woods finished his first round tied in fourth and bogey-free, the first time he had achieved the feat in The Masters.

At Tuesday's Champions Dinner, Woods was reportedly "very emotional", according to six-time Masters winner Jack Nicklaus.

“I've never seen Tiger that way," Nicklaus said.

Collingwood pins heartbreak on wife

Collingwood has incredibly claimed Adam Treloar would still be playing for the Magpies in 2021 if his wife had not made the decision to continue her netball career in Queensland.

Treloar’s wife, Kim Ravaillion, is an Australian player who used to play for Collingwood’s netball team, but took the 2020 season off to give birth to the couple’s daughter, Georgie.

Magpies list manager Ned Guy claimed the club would not have even considered moving Treloar if Ravaillion hadn’t chosen to play for the Queensland Firebirds.
