Wimbledon champ falls out of wheelchair, still wins point

THE sport of wheelchair tennis is truly remarkable.

Not only do these athletes combine amazing upper body strength with hard-fought endurance, they compete with the best in the world when it comes to skill and shot execution.

Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez proved this exactly with one amazing point scored during his Wimbledon doubles semi-final alongside partner Nicolas Peifer.

In their match against Stephane Houdet and Shingo Kunieda, Peifer served, before the ball was returned to centre court in front of Fernandez.

Diving to his left, Fernandez returned the shot, only to fall from his chair in the process. While still on his hands, Fernandez played a quick shot to in response to the opposition’s barrage of his position.

Recovering quickly, Fernandez then rushed to retrieve the ball from the edge of the court, lobbing it over his opposition’s head and securing the point.

Fernandez and Peifer went on to win the match and also took out the men’s wheelchair doubles final, crowning them Wimbledon champions for 2015.
