Rebel Wilson’s unusual friendship with a Czech tennis star has been thrust into the limelight after some revealing comments at Wimbledon.

Karolina Muchova explains friendship with Rebel Wilson

Karolina Muchova won’t be the only person upset she lost her Wimbledon quarter-final to Elina Svitolina. Rebel Wilson will be too.

Few Australians would have heard of the 22-year-old Czech, who is ranked 68th in the world and entered this grand slam unseeded. She doesn’t even have a headshot on her official profile page on the WTA website.

But more people will know Muchova’s name now after an impressive run in London, making the quarter-finals before being knocked out in straight sets by Svitolina in her best ever result at a grand slam.

Wilson already knew about Muchova ahead of Wimbledon after the pair struck up a friendship at last year’s US Open. The Australian actress congratulated the world No. 68 on Twitter after her win over Anett Kontaveit and again on Manic Monday after she upset third seed Karolina Pliskova.

Wilson went to Wimbledon on Monday and sat in Muchova’s box to watch her victory over Pliskova.

Ahead of her clash against Svitolina, Muchova was asked about the unlikely friendship she’d formed with the Aussie celebrity and some more details were revealed as the topic of discussion at her press conference drifted off tennis.

Reporter: What’s the story with you and Rebel Wilson?

Karolina Muchova: You know, she texted me last year at the US Open. She likes tennis. We’re friends. She’s super nice. She texted me today about tickets, so I gave her tickets to my box, and she enjoyed it, yeah.

R: Was that the first time you met her, US Open last year?

KM: Yeah, last year.

R: How did you meet in the first place?

KM: We went for dinner in New York.

R: How did you first meet her? Like, people saw Rebel Wilson in the box and thought, how do these two people know each other?

KM: Yeah, it’s crazy. She texted me on Twitter last year when I beat (Garbine) Muguruza, so she texted me. I was, like, ‘Wow’. I was surprised about that. Yeah, she’s just super chill and super nice person.

R: What’s she like at dinner?

KM: What’s she like?

R: Is she, like, cracking jokes all the time?

KM: Yeah, she’s super funny. Whatever she says, yeah, she’s a cool person.

R: Had you seen Bridesmaids before?

KM: I’m not sure. I’m not sure.

After the biggest win of her professional career to advance to the quarters, Muchova also said: “She (Wilson) texted me in the morning and asked about tickets, so obviously I had some free spots in my box so I was happy to give (them) to her.

“She’s a nice, kind person so I was happy she came to cheer for me.”
