World No.1 Iga Swiatek has won her third grand slam singles title, defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in straight sets to win the US Open in New York.

The Polish star was far from her best on Sunday morning AEST, but the 21-year-old’s consistent first serve ensured she raced to a 6-2 7-6 victory at Flushing Meadows.

Switake dominated the first set on Arthur Ashe Stadium, breaking serve three times to take an early lead over her Tunisian rival.

But Jabeur, this year’s runner-up at Wimbledon, fought back in the second set, forcing a tiebreak and threatening to mount a remarkable comeback.

However, Swiatek held her nerve to win the tiebreak 7-5 and claim her first major hardcourt title.

She becomes the first woman to win multiple grand slam singles titles in the same year since Angelique Kerber achieved the feat in 2016.

"I really tried but Iga didn't make it easy for me," a dejected Jabeur said after the loss.

"I don't like her very much right now, but it's OK.

"We're going to get that title some time soon."

Swiatek continued: "Before this tournament, it was such a challenging time ... and for sure this tournament was challenging, also. Because it's New York! It's so loud. It's so crazy. So many temptations in the city ... I'm really proud I could handle it mentally.

"Ons, such an amazing tournament, such an amazing season, I know this is already a pretty nice rivalry and I'm sure we're going to have many more. And I'm pretty sure you're going to win some of them. So don't worry."

Earlier on Sunday, Storm Sanders and John Peers became the first Australian duo in 21 years to win the US Open mixed doubles title.
