Touching detail in Iga Swiatek outfit sends the world an important message
French Open champion Iga Swiatek has been sending the world an important message with a significant detail in her on-court outfit.
Iga Swiatek delivered an emotional message about Russia’s war against Ukraine after winning the French Open final on Sunday.
Swiatek beat Coco Gauff in straight sets but she had the awareness to use her platform in Paris for more than just tennis.

“I want to say to Ukraine, ‘Stay strong’. The war is still there,” she said during the on-court presentation, to cheers from her rival and spectators in the stands.
Swiatek has been wearing a ribbon with the colours of Ukraine’s flag pinned to her cap at Roland Garros, urging people not to forget about the atrocities being committed by Vladimir Putin.
“Since I made my speech in Doha (after winning the tournament in February) it had started and I was hoping when I do the next tournament speech the situation will be better but I will still have hope,” Swiatek said of her ribbon.
Speaking to NBC, Swiatek added: “The war is still there and people are suffering.
“Many players have taken off the ribbons and there is huge discussion about next tournaments and points. It’s not about that but the whole situation there and I want people to be aware.”
Swiatek’s second French Open title is “just the beginning of the journey” for the world number one, her coach Tomasz Wiktorowski said after she extended her winning streak to 35 matches, equalling the run of Venus Williams for the best this century.
Swiatek has won six titles now in 2022 and has not lost since Dubai in February.
“This is just the beginning of this journey, we have much more to do and every single tournament just bring us new information,” said Wiktorowski.
“We will try to develop other tools. To be honest, we do not count the victories. We live day by day.”
Wiktorowski described the excitement of Swiatek’s latest win as “10 out of 10”, highlighting his player’s strengths.
“We were all very, very proud. From the very beginning we all decided to focus on her strengths, she’s a dynamite on the court. So when you are dynamite on court, you can’t play defensively.”
Swiatek said equalling the longest unbeaten run by a female player in the 21st century made winning her second Roland Garros title even more “special”.
Swiatek’s victory also took her past Serena Williams’ longest unbeaten streak of 34 matches.
“I think honestly, it may seem pretty weird, but having that 35th win and kind of doing something more than Serena did, it’s something special,” said the 21-year-old.
“Because I always wanted to … have some kind of a record. In tennis it’s pretty hard after Serena’s career.
“So that really hit me, you know. Obviously winning a Grand Slam too, but this one was pretty special because I felt like I’ve done something that nobody has ever done, and maybe it’s gonna be even more.”
