CZECH tennis player Jana Novotna, a Wimbledon champion in 1998, has died at the age of 49, the WTA said on Monday.

“After a long battle with cancer, Jana died peacefully, surrounded by her family in her native Czech Republic,” the WTA said on its website.

Novotna was famously brought to tears after losing the 1993 Wimbledon final against Steffi Graf when leading 4-1 in the deciding set but eventually claimed the title five years later.

Novotna won 24 singles titles, with the 1998 Wimbledon crown her only Grand Slam title. She reached the final of the Australian Open in 1991.
