Djokovic hunted down a drop shot near the umpire’s stand before Mektic and Venus almost collided going for an overhead smash.
Kyrgios pulled out two tweeners but it was Venus who had the last laugh. After Kyrgios’ second tweener, Venus pulled the trigger on a forehand that proved too good to seal the opening point of his service game.
The crowd erupted over the absurdity of it all as Kyrgios and Djokovic stood on in stunned disbelief.
Those watching on couldn’t quite believe what they’d just witnessed as many were quick to label it a contender for the point of the year.
Peter Psaltis said on Nine’s coverage: “That has got to be one of the points of the year.”
John Millman added: “What on earth just happened there. Absolutely stunning.”
Tennis journalist Jose Morgado wrote on X: “Oh my god.”
The Tennis Letter wrote: “Barely into 2025 … but I’ll be shocked if we’ll see a better doubles point this season. Insane hands. Showmanship all around.”
Another wrote: “Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios played one of the craziest points you will ever see.”
Despite the star power of Kyrgios and Djokovic, the doubles specialists in Mektic and Venus proved far too strong as they raced away to claim the opening set 6-2.
After a brief back and forth in the opening games, the number one seeded pairing began to assert their dominance.
But after appearing to be all at sea against their opponents, the star-studded duo bounced back in the second set.
Behind Kyrgios’ thunderous serve and Djokovic’s breathtaking shot making, the unranked pair claimed the set 6-3 to send it into a deciding tiebreak.
Kyrgios pulled out the party tricks in the early stages of the tiebreak, claiming two points with centimetre perfect lobs.
But Mektic and Venus refused to let them ride the momentum of the crowd as they secured the early 3-2 advantage.
Then the unlikely duo erupted as they rattled off four straight points and had the crowd in raptures.
After moving ahead 8-6 it all began to unravel however as the top seeded pair roared back to life.
Mektic and Venus claimed four straight points to secure the 6-2, 3-6, (10-8) victory and book their place in the quarterfinal stages while sending Kyrgios and Djokovic on their way.
