Nick Kyrgios’ bizarre attack on pop star Sam Smith over ‘fisherthem’ comment

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has caused a stir after a pointed comment surrounding pop icon Sam Smith’s recent TV appearance.

Nick Kyrgios has taken a surprising swipe at pop artist Sam Smith.

The Grammy winner, who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, last month had to correct a TV host when referred to as a “fisherman”.

The 30-year-old’s reply has become a point of conversation around the world, after the Unholy singer said they dreamed of becoming a “fisherthem”.

During an interview with BBC’s The One Show, Smith was asked about fishing as a hobby, replying: “I do love fishing, yes. Yeah, I’d love to be a fisherthem.

“I do it on the sea, and I do it on lakes. I’ve never done it alone. Someone’s almost taught me.”

Kyrgios on Monday posted a clip of Smith’s answers on his Instagram stories, sharing a video from the popular @thatguysjokes account which has more than one million followers.

Kyrgios wrote on the post: “This is so cringe bro I can’t”.

His post included a crying-with-laughter emoji.

You cannot be serious, Sam.

The comedy account’s post also said Smith’s statement “might be the worst thing I’ve ever heard”.

The three-time Brit Award winner publicly announced they are gay in 2014 and then in 2019 announced they are non-binary.

Smith has previously spoken before about being abused, including being spat on in the street in the UK.

“It’s just so sad that we’re in 2023, and it’s still happening,” Smith told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in January.

“It’s exhausting, and especially in England.”

Sky News host Rita Panahi was last month one of many outspoken critics to claim Smith has been using deliberately provocative language to attract attention.

“I don’t think he’s ever fished in his life, I think he put that in there on purpose to get the word ‘fisher-them’ out,” Mr Robinson told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“It doesn’t sound right, but he’s buttering the language for attention, and it’s worked – he’s such an attention-seeker.”

Kyrgios, meanwhile, recently made headlines for his appearance on Logan Paul’s IMPAULSIVE podcast — which hosts 4.4 million subscribers — where he made some eye-catching statements.

During the bizarre appearance Kyrgios said he believes the Egyptian Pyramids are not man-made.
