‘Got some talking to do’: Alex de Minaur in hot water with girlfriend

Alex de Minaur and his girlfriend Katie Boulter both won titles on a banner day for the tennis couple, and she had a cheeky sledge for him.

Alex de Minaur’s girlfriend Katie Boulter had a cheeky dig at the Aussie after the golden tennis couple both won grass court titles on the same day.

Boulter retained her Nottingham Open crown in front of a home crowd on Sunday, with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory in the final over Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

Her success came just hours after top seed De Minaur defeated Sebastian Korda of the United States 6-2, 6-4 to take the s’Hertogenbosch title — an equivalent men’s warm-up event for Wimbledon.

After securing her third WTA tour title, Boulter jokingly chided De Minaur for not making the relatively short journey from the Netherlands to the English city of Nottingham to cheer her on.

“My boyfriend didn’t make the trip even though I thought he might after his win in ‘s-Hertogenbosch but yeah we’ll have to be talking about that tonight and see if we’re going to be still together,” said Boulter, who is ranked 31st in the world.

“I don’t know, but I hope he’s going to be listening to this because we’ve got some talking to do!”

It was the second time the pair had won titles in the same week and they shared heartfelt tributes to each other on social media.

De Minaur wrote on Instagram: “No way you just did that.”

“Double trouble, another unreal week.”

Boulter said De Minaur was an “inspiration everyday”.

De Minaur earned a career-high ranking of No. 7 — it’s the highest ranking for any Aussie male since 2006 when Lleyton Hewitt achieved the same mark.

Only Hewitt and Pat Rafter have been ranked higher than de Minaur among Australian men this century.

“It achieves a new career high for me, so that’s always a great little bonus and (my) first week on grass couldn’t have gone any better, so I’m looking forward to next week in Queen’s and the whole grass court season with a smile on my face,” he said.

“I’m glad I was able to get a win here in Holland.”

The win adds to a stunning season for de Minaur, who has registered wins over higher-ranked opponents and defended a title for the first time at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco.

He also reached the final in Rotterdam and the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo and is ranked sixth in the Race to Turin, where the eight best-performed men will compete in the end-of-year tour finals.

The Australian gun will now turn his attention to the ATP 500 tournament at Queen’s in London, where the Australian was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz last year. He lifted his other trophy on grass at Eastbourne in 2021.
