Former Aussie tennis star Sam Groth weighs up shock career switch
Retired tennis star Sam Groth is weighing up a surprise career move after being headhunted for a tough contest.
Former tennis ace Sam Groth is considering a political run, revealing he’s been approached by the Liberal Party ahead of the state election.
The 34-year-old, who holds the world record for the world’s fastest serve, hasn’t ruled out running in the seat of Nepean, which covers the southern Mornington Peninsula.
Once considered a safe seat for the Liberals, Nepean was won by Labor’s then 25-year-old Chris Brayne in a shock victory at the 2018 election.
Mr Brayne, who previously worked in the electrical industry and at Dromana Drive-Ins, would become just the second Labor MP to hold the seat in the past 100 years.
However, the Liberals are seemingly keen to claw Nepean back, with Mr Groth being headhunted by party heavyweights.
“Yes, I have been approached. I’m undecided and I’m weighing up my options,” he told Herald Sun.
“Like many Victorians, I think it’s time for a change in government.”
The peninsula has been embattled throughout the pandemic with businesses in isolated areas disgruntled at being locked down despite very low case numbers.
Mr Groth, who lives in Blairgowrie, would be the Liberals first celebrity candidate of this election cycle and it comes a year after he and wife Britt welcomed his twin boys, Mason and Parker.
