RE-LIVE FEDERER v TSONGA IN THE BOX BELOW

12.50am AEDT - BARTY, DELLACQUA INTO WOMEN'S DOUBLES FINAL

Australians Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua have earned a spot in the women's doubles final at Melbourne Park with a 6-2 6-4 win against Varvara Lepchenko of the US and China's Saisai Zheng.

The duo will take on Italian pair and No.1 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, who advanced with victory against Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina with exactly the same scoreline, 6-2 6-4.

11.20pm AEDT - FEDERER DOWNS TSONGA IN FIVE

Roger Federer has defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-3 in a five set thriller to set up a semi-final showdown with Andy Murray on Friday night.

The Scot beat Federer in last year's Olympic Games gold medal match, after Federer defeated Murray in the Wimbledon final.

With top seed Novak Djokovic and fourth seed David Ferrer through to Thursday night's semi, it means the top four seeds are the last four survivors in the men's draw for just the 15th time in a major in the open era.

10.37pm AEDT - FEDERER-TSONGA INTO THE FIFTH

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has taken the fourth set 6-3 to send his quarter-final with Roger Federer to a fifth set.

It has not been vintage Roger Federer, but the great Swiss has done enough to take a 7-6 4-6 7-6 lead against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Short points have been the feature of this serve-dominated contest. But it's not over yet.

9.05pm AEDT - TSONGA LEVELS AT ONE SET APIECE

Roger Federer is having an off night so far and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has made him pay, taking the second set 6-4 after losing the first in a tiebreak.

Federer hasn't been able to get going.

8.35pm AEDT - FEDERER WINS FIRST SET

Despite dropping his serve for the first time in the tournament, Roger Federer has taken the first set against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-4 in a tiebreak.

Follow the action in the live chat above.

7.10pm AEDT

Twenty minutes away from what we all hope will be an entertaining encounter between Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Could we see an upset tonight on Rod Laver Arena? Tsonga is the only man to have beaten Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in a grand slam.

The winner will meet Murray in the semis. The Scot hasn't featured in a night match yet and took to Hisense Arena tonight to get used to playing under lights.

5.55pm AEDT - MURRAY MOTORS INTO SEMIS

Andy Murray had little trouble earning his spot in the final four, needing a little over an hour and half to move past France's Jeremy Chardy 6-4 6-1 6-2.

Chardy, the man responsible for knocking out Juan Martin Del Potro in the third round, had no answers for the Scot, who will next meet the winner of tonight's clash between Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga in the semi-finals.

The loss brought to an end the 25-year-old Chardy's best grand slam campaign.

5.25pm AEDT - ITALIANS TO PLAY AUSSIES?

We'll find out later tonight whether Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty will play in the women's doubles final at the Aus Open, but we already know who their opponents will be should they make it.

Italian pair and No.1 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci had little trouble in getting past Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-4.

5.22pm AEDT - CHARDY FALLS AWAY

The floodgates opened in the second set between third seed Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy, with the Scot breaking him three times to take a two sets to love lead.

If you couldn't see the score, you'd think Chardy was in the hunt, such is the quality of some of his attacking play, but Murray's ability to remain in points proving too much for the explosive Frenchman.

Chardy again started the set slowly and was broken by Murray in the third game, and pressed for too much on his next service game, too, capitulating a second time to go 4-1 down.

The Scot won arguably the best point of the match at 30-40 down on serve in the next game when he chased two balls wide, retrieved a Chardy smash and another well-placed forehand down the line, forcing Chardy to play a high volley that he drilled into the top of the net.

And that was Chardy's last gasp as he handed over another service game to put Murray one step closer to a probable semi-final berth.

4.50pm AEDT - MURRAY TESTED IN FIRST SET

Andy Murray didn't have it all his own way, but was still good enough to win the first set against Jeremy Chardy.

Chardy was nervous early, and was broken in his opening service game after sending down two double faults and an easy volley error.

Murray took full advantage of the Frenchman's woes, breaking him again to lead 4-0, but Chardy finally settled and began troubling the Scot, who was broken back and tested on his final service game, which he eventually won to take the set 6-4.

The match may well rest on Chardy's racquet if he gets going. So far he's hit 14 winners and 13 unforced errors, while Murray has hit a couple less in each category.

4.43pm AEDT - AUSSIE DUO'S DREAM RUN ENDS

They both win through to the quarter-finals with singles wins earlier today, but Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios couldn't repeat the dose in their doubles match this afternoon.

The Australians, who had taken full advantage of a wildcard entry into the draw, were beaten in the boys' doubles quarter-finals by Enzo Couacaud - who Kokkinakis sent packing from the singles this morning - and Stefano Napolitano.

The boys will be back in action, separately this time, tomorrow.

3.44pm AEDT - SERENA WILLIAMS OUT OF OPEN

American 19-year-old Sloane Stephens has recorded the biggest win of her short career, ending world No.3 Serena Williams Australian Open titles hopes in a dramatic quarter-final.

Stephens recovered after dropping the first set 6-3 but hit back as Williams struggled with a back injury, taking the next two sets 7-5 6-4.

In an enthralling final set, Williams' condition slowly improved but Stephens went with her, matching the world No.3 both in the power stakes and also game by game on the scoreboard.

Stephens faced four break points at 3-3 but and scrambled to save three of them, but went to the well one too many times, netting an off-forehand to give Williams a service break and a 4-3 lead.

But the teen would not be silenced, breaking back immediately before holding serve despite Williams pressing her again at 4-4.

Williams missed what should have been a simple passing shot at 15-15 as she served to stay in the match, and when Williams dumped a regulation backhand into the net Stephens had two match points.

She needed only one.

Williams netted yet another backhand halfway up the net to mark the biggest moment in the 29th seed's career.

An overwhelmed Stephens said she couldn't believe she had taken out the woman whose poster had adorned her bedroom walls.

"I think I'll have a poster of myself now."

3.04pm AEDT

Serena Williams has just taken out her injury frustrations on one of her racquets, burying it into the court after losing a game to trail Sloane Stephens 2-1 in the third set of their quarter-final.

Williams destroyed the racquet and was issued with a code violation for her troubles.

2.52pm AEDT - INJURED SERENA DROPS SECOND SET

A wounded Serena Williams is in big danger of crashing out of the Australian Open after suffering a back injury and losing the second set to fellow American Sloane Stephens.

Williams appeared to injure her lower back while serving at 3-4, losing the game and leaving the court before returning, only for a nervous Stephens to hang on to take the 7-5 after Williams won the first 6-3.

Williams is unable to serve with anything like her usual power, although she appears to be moving OK early in the third set.

READ HOW THE INJURY UNFOLDED BELOW.

2.35pm AEDT - WILLIAMS INJURES BACK IN SECOND SET

Serena Williams appears to have injured her back and has left the court for treatment in the second set against Sloane Stephens.

Williams was 3-4 down in the set after taking the first 6-3 when Stephens framed a ball that effectively became a dropshot, forcing the world No.3 to charge at the net to hit an awkward backhand winner but simultaneously put the brakes on.

The move prompted an immediate cry of pain from Williams, who was unable to serve with any power for the remainder of the game, which she then lost to trail 3-5.

Stephens served for the set but a series of Williams winners grabbed the break back, but Williams immediately called for the trainer, who took her from the court for treatment.

2.15pm AEDT - MORE AUSSIE JUNIORS THROUGH

Nick Kyrgios will join doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis in the quarter-finals of the boys' singles after the No.3 seed had too mucn firepower for another Aussie, Omar Jasika.

Kyrgios cracked 23 winners to eight in the 6-4 6-3 result, and will now play seventh-seeded South African Wayne Montgomery.

1.57pm AEDT - SLOANE RANGER BLINKS FIRST

Sloane Stephens went toe to toe with Serena Williams...for three-quarters of the first set in their quarter-final.

Both women barely gave up a point on serve in the opening six games, but at the business end of the set Williams dialed up the pressure and Stephens cracked, dropping serve to trail 5-3.

Williams had no trouble serving it out, sealing it with an unreturnable serve down the middle - one of 12 forced errors from the 19-year-old's racquet so far.

1.45pm AEDT - BRYAN BROTHERS DO THEIR THING

No.1 doubles seeds the Bryan brothers have cruised into the semi-finals, barely raising a sweat in beating Daniele Bracciali and Lukas Dlouhy 6-3 7-5.

Mike and Bob were the last pairing into the semis, and will now play Italians Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.

1.03pm AEDT - AZARENKA BOOKS SEMIS BERTH

Victoria Azarenka took a blast from a Russian tank and lived to tell the tale out on Rod Laver Arena, with the world No.1 weathering a storm from Svetlana Kuznetsova to emerge a 7-5 6-1 winner.

Azarenka was outgunned early in the first set as Kuznetsova raced to a 4-1 advantage, but the Belarussian stormed back to win six of the next seven games and take the set.

Kuznetsova rolled her ankle early in the second set and never looked the same, with unforced errors - 15 for the set - pouring off her racquet and Azarenka turning the screws to win six games in a row from 1-1 to win the match and continue her march to a potential title defence.

12.34pm AEDT - AZARENKA DRAWS FIRST BLOOD

World No.1 Victoria Azarenka weathered everything Svetlana Kuznetsova threw at her and still came out on top in a marathon 77-minute first set of their quarter-final stoush.

Azarenka trailed 4-1 and was struggling to come to terms with the Russian's mix of brains and brawn, but found a way back, winning six of the next seven games to steal the set 7-5.

Kuznetsova's crushing forehand - which was occasionally shelved for her highly effective inside-out forehand dropshots - took her to a 4-1 lead before Azarenka finally found her range, holding serving and breaking the Russian back to square the ledger at 4-4.

Kuznetsova steadied to again put the pressure back on the Belarussian, but Azarenka had more answers, breaking again and then emerging from a tense game on serve to finish the set.

12.06pm AEDT - KOKKINAKIS GETS BALL ROLLING

Aussies stars are being born before our eyes on the outside courts, where Thanasi Kokkinakis has just won through to the quarter-finals of the boys' singles with a 6-2 6-0 whitewash against Enzo Couacaud.

Kokkinakis, 16, took just 52 minutes to dispose of the Frenchman, and will now likely take on No.2 seed Gianluigi Quinzi.

He will also be in quarter-finals doubles action again later today with partner Nick Kyrgios, who is up next on Show Court 2 for his singles match against another Australian, Omar Jasika.

11.36am AEDT - AUSSIE KIDS IN ACTION

There are no days off for the young Aussies in the junior boys' singles, but that isn't bothering rising star Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The 16-year-old wildcard entry has launched into his match against Frenchman Enzo Couacaud, taking the first set 6-2.

Kokkinakis rushed to a 5-1 lead in just 20 minutes before Couacaud put a stop to it to trail 5-2, but the lull was only temporary as the Aussie broke serve again in the following game to grab the set.

Meanwhile, world No.1 Victoria Azarenka isn't having it all her own way on Rod Laver Arena.

EVery game so far has had multiple deuces, and again she's being pushed all the way by Svetlana Kuznetsova on serve, trailing 1-2.

10.30am AEDT

First up on Rod Laver Arena is defending champion Azarenka, who will take on resurgent Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Serena Williams will later take on the young lady she's already anointed as her successor, Sloane Stephens, in what will be the biggest test of the 19-year-old's career so far.

And on the men's side, it's another day for the Frenchmen, with Jeremy Chardy trying to continue the best run of his career. But standing in his way is the form man of the tournament, Andy Murray.

And tonight it's that man Roger Federer, who'll take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

It's not often in recent years that we've still got Aussies in action at this stage of a grand slam, but we'll all be cheering on Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty as they play for a spot in the women's doubles final.
