The wasted tennis talent is attempting to revive his playing career — and he’s got an eye-catching new haircut as he begins his comeback.

If you thought the hype video was cringey, wait until you see the haircut.

Bernard Tomic is apparently launching a tennis comeback after sliding to 254th in the ATP world rankings and as well as hopefully doing a little bit of training, he’s going hard on social media.

A day after releasing a short clip to his Instagram page which showed him working out and declared “it’s time to set the record straight”, Tomic has now unveiled a bold new look.

The 29-year-old has bleached his normally dark hair, posting footage of himself at the barber with the caption: “New start. New cut.”

Tomic, who burst onto the scene by making the quarterfinals of Wimbledon as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, is the lowest ranked of any Australian on the men’s tour.

It was only five years ago the 29-year-old sat as high as 17th in the world, but his off-court antics have garnered more attention than his ability on it in the past decade.

He was fined three times in one day by Gold Coast police in 2012, was arrested in Miami in 2015 and famously declared all he does is “count my millions” in a bizarre press conference after failing to qualify for the 2018 Australian Open.

Tomic also holds the unwanted record in men’s tennis for the quickest loss in ATP history after being swept aside by Jarkko Nieminen in 28 minutes and 20 seconds in Miami in 2014.

More recently his on-off relationship with model Vanessa Sierra has seen him make headlines, including being seen in sexually-suggestive photos and smashing a laptop in an apparent moment of rage.

But now, it seems, he’s ready to resume life on tour.

“I’ve had a lot of hate in my life, but I can’t give up,” Tomic said in the hype video. “You don’t think I see the hate comments. It hurts.

“In the past, I used to let it get to me and react out of stupidity.

“But now, I’m using it as fuel. I’m back. I am. I’m hungry and I’m ready.

“No one can stop me now, but me. I’m training, I’m sweating, I’m pushing, I’m fired up. Whatever it takes to get back to the top.

“Hard work pays off. I put my blood, sweat and tears into this sport. I’ve come back before and it’s time to set the record straight.”

With a massive summer of tennis in Australia looming, Tomic has picked the perfect time to try and win back over the nation — though it might be too late for many,

He’ll have to navigate the maze that is the Australian Open qualifiers, which he failed to get out of in 2018 and 2020.

At Melbourne Park, Tomic has only made it as far as the fourth round, which he achieved in 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Speaking to the Gold Coast Bulletin on the weekend, Tomic said his promising run at this year’s Australian Open reignited the “fire” inside him and is hoping to crack the top 10 within a few years.

“I had too much success at a young age,” he said.

“Everything got to me. The travel, day in, day out tournaments. By age 25 I was tired and starting saying dumb s*** in the media.

“There are so many things I should not have said, should not have done. But I did.

“I’m going to try and turn this around and give myself the best chance in the next couple of years. I’ve got one more chance at this. I’ll try and do it for myself.

“Now it’s all about getting it right and having a good crack at the next five or six years and trying to get back to the top.”
