Djokovic completes straight sets masterclass

Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the Australian Open final with a clinical straight sets win over Russian Aslan Karatsev.

The world No. 1 rolled through the qualifier in less than two hours 6-3 6-4 6-2 and at times appeared to do it without needing to get out of second gear.

Djokovic was only tested at the end of the second set, but came up with the clutch serves when he needed them as he struggled to serve it out.

The Serbian now has two days to rest before Sunday night's final against either Daniil Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Djokovic's fitness has been one of the biggest question marks of the entire tournament after he appeared to suffer an abdominals injury during his five-set struggle with Taylor Fritz.

The 33-year-old has refused to discuss the exact nature of the injury and his movement appeared troubled in the matches that followed.

However, he said in his on-court interview that he is already recovering from the injury, speculated to be a muscle strain.

"This is the best I've felt all tournament," he said.

"I Felt great. I could swing through the ball, no pain.
"Just best match so far. It came at the right time. I'm thrilled."

Djokovic steals Federer's iconic record

Novak Djokovic is guaranteed to replace Roger Federer at the top of the ATP Tour's most-weeks-as-world-No. 1 list – even before making the final of the Aussie Open.

Djokovic came to the Aussie Open gunning for Federer's record of 310 weeks as the World No. 1 – as well as a staggering ninth Australian Open crown.

Djokovic is certain to pass Federer's record in March following Rafael Nadal's quarter-final loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday.

It means Nadal cannot jump Djokovic before he hits 311 weeks at the top of men's tennis.

With 17 grand slam titles, Djokovic is just two behind Nadal and Federer, and also enjoys a winning head-to-head record against both of them.

Federer took 15 years to amass his haul of weeks as the best player on Earth, having first reached No. 1 in 2004.

Freak Djokovic in 'almost flawless' rampage

Novak Djokovic has raced to a 6-3 6-4 lead in just over an hour in one of the most silky performances he's produced on Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic put up a freakish 19 winners and just one unforced error at 4-1 in the second set.

Aussie great Todd Woodbridge described the form as "almost flawless".

He had broken Karatsev's serve to love three times before the Russian came out of nowhere to secure one break back at 5-3 in the second set.

Djokovic eventually closed it out 6-4 with his third set point after having to defend two break points.

Djokovic attacked by pesky Melbourne local

Novak Djokovic has taken the first set against Aslan Karatsev after facing a hairy moment in his first test on serve.

The world No. 1 was serving at 30-30 on second serve in the third game of the match when he was visited by a butterfly that floated across the court while he was at the start of his service motion. He pulled up and had a giggle as the bug went straight for his face.

Jim Courier said in TV commentary: "As he gets attacked by some friendly flyers there".

He eventually went on to hold serve and take an early 2-1 lead.
He secured the crucial only break of serve in the first set at 4-3 and quickly closed out the set 6-3 in 35 minutes.

Brady makes final after insane final service game

American Jennifer Brady will meet Naomi Osaka in the final of the Australian Open after being forced to win her semi-final twice against Karolina Muchova.

Brady took out the riveting contest 6-4 3-6 6-4 in a match that had everything.

Brady secured a break early in the third set and then carried it all the way through.

Serving for the match at 5-4 on match point, Brady collapsed when Muchova appeared to bury a backhand into the net.

While Brady was on her knees celebrating, her groundstroke that preceded Muchova's error was called long.

Replays showed the ball was out by 7mm.

After a brief moment of confusion, the match turned bonkers as Brady was forced to re-group when Muchova secured a break back point.

Muchova had three break point chances in the marathon final service game before Brady served it out on her fifth match point.

The No. 22 seed has had a dream Aussie Open final, having gone the entire tournament without playing a player ranked higher than her.

She is now in a grand slam final for the first time in her career.

"I can’t feel my legs. My legs are shaking, my heart is racing. I’m a little nervous," she said in her on-court interview.

Brady gets crucial break in the third set

Jennifer Brady rode out an extraordinary clean run from Karolina Muchova to secure the early break in the deciding set.

Muchova went an incredible seven service games without coughing up an unforced error.

When she finally did, Brady pounced.

She led 4-2 mid-way through the set and is two games away from her first grand slam final.

'Ruthless' Osaka topples tennis superstar

American superstar Serena Williams got off to a flyer in her semi-final against Japan's Naomi Osaka by immediately breaking serve.

Despite a cluster of early unforced errors, Osaka managed to prevent a double break soon after.

The 23-year-old then held her nerve to put the opening set back on serve at 2-2.

Errors started to creep into Williams' gameplay as Osaka won five consecutive games in a stunning shift in momentum.

The American's forehands became less accurate as the match progressed, which ultimately cost her the first set.

Williams' frustration was more apparent early in the second set when she occasionally screamed out after making mistakes.

To rub salt into the wounds, Osaka started the second set by breaking serve once again, the momentum heavily in her favour.

Osaka seemed in complete control of her game as she took a 2-0 lead, with Serena's powerful serves keeping her in the contest.

Sports reporter Ryan Gerbosi tweeted: "Just ruthless play by Osaka tonight, I’m here for it."

But in a late twist, Osaka delivered three double faults in a service game to help put the second set back on serve at 4-4.

Incredibly, Osaka fought back to immediately break serve to love at the other end, putting herself one service game away from an Australian Open final.

Osaka finished the job in style, ending Williams' Australian Open campaign.

"I hit a lot of unforced errors in the first few games, and I was just really, like, nervous and scared I think in the beginning," Osaka said after the win.

"Then I sort of eased my way into it. For me, I think the biggest thing is just having fun and it's the first day having the crowd in a while.

"It's always an honour to play her. I just didn't want to go out like really bad, so I just wanted to try my best."

Williams vs Osaka live score: 3-6, 4-6

Tennis world besotted with Serena's necklace

Serena Williams donned a necklace with the words "Queen" during her semi-final clash on Thursday, and tennis fans loved it.

Radio presenter Jeffrey Wright tweeted: "Serena’s wearing a 'Queen' necklace without anyone's objecting is one of the biggest power moves ever."

'Nonsense': Aus Open's glaring problem

Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams have entered Rod Laver Arena for their blockbuster semi-finals clash.

It's shaping up to be one of the tournament's most anticipated matches, particularly considering crowds were allowed back into Melbourne Park on Thursday.

But despite the 50 per cent capacity allocation, the two superstars were greeted by largely empty stands as they warmed up.

While the men's semi-finals have been scheduled for the primetime evening slot, the women's matches take place in the early afternoon of a weekday.

New York Times reporter Ben Rothenberg tweeted: "It's continued nonsense that #AusOpen still doesn't think the women's semifinals are worthy of a night session, but that men's semifinals are so great that they each deserve their own night session."

Australian Open director Craig Tiley said in a statement: “We look forward to welcoming fans back to the Australian Open for the next four days and to finishing the event safely and on a high."
