Serena Williams struts her stuff in new outfit at Australian Open

It was 33C in Melbourne, but Serena Williams wore a raincoat before her match to conceal a crazy new ensemble — because fashion.

Fair enough.
Fair enough.

Serena Williams has stunned Melbourne Park with a brazen fashion statement in her first round match at the Australian Open.

Williams kept the world waiting for minutes, completing her warm-up while wearing a black raincoat with long sleeves that completely concealed her new playing gear.

Williams completed the full warm-up in the coat, despite the 33C heat at Melbourne Park — and only took it off to reveal her bold new design after the chair umpire had already called time.

Serena will wear the jade green, figure-hugging jumpsuit, matched with fishnet stockings for the full two weeks at Melbourne Park.

The green jumpsuit is sleeveless and hugs the young mum’s figure all the way from her shoulders to where the legs are cut just below her gluteus maximus.

Speaking after her straight sets win over Tatjana Maria, Williams said her outfit was called the “Serena-tard”.

“Nike always wants to make an incredibly strong, powerful statement for mums that are trying to get back and get fit. That was basically it for me,” Williams said.

The ensemble is marked with one vertical white stripe and one horizontal white stripe down the front of her torso and a triangle cut-out hole in the middle of her back.

The new ensemble — and the flashy way it was revealed — was immediately the talk of Melbourne Park and comes after she stunned onlookers at other grand slam events recently with her bold fashion.

Those outfits included a pink tutu at last year’s US Open and her famous black catsuit which was banned by the French Open.

The new ensemble was completed with pulled up white socks and black, khaki new Nike sneakers.

Williams’ new look had an immediate impact on her on-court performance — as the 37-year-old raced through her first set against Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-0 in just 19 minutes where the she dropped just five points. She completed a 6-0 6-2 win in 49 minutes.

Aussie tennis great Todd Woodbridge initially labelled Williams’ mysterious new look as a “track jacket”.

He said the fishnet stockings sported by Williams have been a permanent fixture for the 23-time grand slam winner since her return to the WTA Tour after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia last year.

Fellow Aussie great Jelena Dokic told Channel 9 on commentary that seeing Serena steal the show again is nothing out of the ordinary.

“She has always been known for bringing out new stuff and she is really involved in fashion,” Dokic said.

“So with Serena you can always expect something new every year.”

Serena’s bold new look is hardly the only colourful mix turning heads at the Open.

On Monday, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands wowed Melbourne Park with a new pink floral number which came complete with a black skirt that also had floral patterns.
