British tennis star Emma Raducanu impresses with Aussie accent

British teen and tennis star Emma Raducanu is impressing fans both on and off the court down under with her Aussie accent.

Teenage British tennis star Emma Raducanu is receiving praise for not only her tennis game while down under for the Australian Open.

The tennis world was in shock while watching the 19-year-old US Open champion’s performance at Margaret Court Arena on Tuesday with a 6-0 2-6 6-1 win against Sloane Stephens.

But even before that she was the subject of tennis fans’ praise for a rather different reason … her Aussie accent.

The Australian Open posted a video on social media of players giving the Australian accent their best shot, asking: “Which player has the best accent?”.

Raducanu went for the standard “G’day mate” before stepping it up a level with a very Melbourne coffee order.

“I’ll have an almond milk flat white,” she said.

Afraid she’d butchered it, Raducanu was quick to laugh at herself and apologise.

“No. That was awful. Stop,” she laughed. “I’m sorry to everyone.”

But it turns out fans were pretty impressed.

“Emma’s accent sounds almost native lol,” one person commented on Instagram, gaining hundreds of likes in support.

Others said her Aussie accent was “perfect” and “spot on”.

Raducanu was born in Canada to a Chinese mother and Romanian father, but grew up in the UK.

After her historic US Open win, which made her the youngest grand slam winner since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004, Raducanu took to the US Open’s Weibo account to thank her Chinese-speaking fans in Mandarin.

At the Transylvania Open in Romania, Raducanu surprised the crowd by doing her post-match interview in Romanian.
