Live by the sword. Die by the sword.

The statement is what makes Nick Kyrgios who he is – but the eight words will be sour in his mouth this weekend after he let slip one of his greatest wins at the Australian Open.

A spot in the final 16 started to slip from his fingers when his attention turned to hecklers in the crowd, a stubborn umpire and his own highlights reel, with his emotions and temper bouncing around like the balls on court.

It was all Dominic Thiem needed, and - in the blink of an eye - the world No. 3 had ripped it out of Kyrgios' grasp.

The Aussie has been left to pick up the pieces and won't sleep for days after an insane brain snap proved to be the fatal blow.

His collapse, after leading two sets to love, was the headline moment of Day 5, which also included some incredible moments in the women's singles.

Serena Williams was shocked early and Naomi Osaka faced a very different kind of scare when she was set upon by a butterfly in the middle of her third round match.

It was another rollercoaster day at Melbourne Park and it got a lot more dramatic when tournament officials communicated to fans that they must leave the event well before the start of the snap Melbourne lockdown announced for 11.59pm (AEDT) on Friday night.

The sight of a raucous crowd on John Caine Arena cheering on Kyrgios was a fitting end before the Open goes behind closed doors without crowds for at least the next five days.

Kyrgios was just a few points away from making it the perfect farewell.

Here's how all the drama unfolded.
