Australian Open champ Jannik Sinner confirms romance with Anna Kalinskaya

Australian Open Jannik Sinner has not only got tongues wagging with his play on court, but confirming one of tennis’ swirling rumours.

Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner’s year just keeps getting better.

While the Italian world No. 2 came into the French Open with a hip injury, it’s about the only thing that’s gone wrong for the star.

Not only did he claim his first grand slam title at Melbourne Park in January, but even before setting foot on the clay of Roland Garros, Sinner could well be heading for the world’s No. 1 ranking.

After Novak Djokovic’s shock loss in Rome, if he misses the final, Sinner will be crowned world No. 1, even if he gets knocked out in his second round match against Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Djokovic is the defending champion at the tournament and if he loses anywhere before the final, he will drop behind Sinner, who was only defending 10 rankings points after being a second round loser in Paris last year.

It’s a great place for the 22-year-old Sinner to be.

But while his tennis is going well, his personal life is following suit as he went public with his romance with WTA world No. 25 Russian Anna Kalinskaya, 25.

Tennis sleuths had been speculating the pair were a couple after they were seen at recent tournaments.

However, the pair have gone public, appearing in each other’s boxes for their respective first-round victories, before Sinner shared the pair were an item.

“You know, I don’t like to talk much about my private life,” Sinner said in his native language. “Yes, I’m with Anna, but we keep everything very confidential. I won’t say more.”

Tennis social media freelancer Bastien Fachan tweeted alongside a picture of Sinner in the crowd at Kalinskaya’s match: “Sinner cheering on Kalinskaya from her box oh this is a HARD launch.”

Another fan posted: “Jannik and Anna both attending each others matches they are so cute I’m so sick rn.”

Another commented: “Generational tennis talent Jannik Sinner has a 100 per cent win rate since dating his new girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya. I actually feel sorry for his opponents, because this type of greatness is just unbelievably scary to face on court, especially in grand slams.”

A third wrote: “Jannik and Anna are real and not an elaborate tennis twt prank.”

Sinner started his title tilt with a confident 6-3 6-3 6-4 win over American Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks.

The Italian second seed, who withdrew from the Madrid Open and missed the Rome Open with a hip injury, set up a second-round meeting with Gasquet.

It was a strong start considering his injured hip had him sidelined.

“In the beginning I was more worried. Then we made some tests, we’ve seen okay, it’s not that bad,” Sinner said.

“I got sick for quite a long time, so I didn’t touch a racquet for nearly three weeks, which is a lot before a Grand Slam.”

Women’s 23rd seed Kalinskaya downed Frances Clara Burel 7-6 7-5 to set up a second round clash with 2019 US Open champion Canadian Bianca Andrescu.
