Australia Open: all the action from day four of the men’s singles draw from Melbourne Park
THE seeded men are enjoying a good day at the Australian Open, with Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Richard Gasquet among the second-round winners.
Canadian star Milos Raonic has breezed into the third round of the Australian Open, dispatching Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in straight sets.
The No.3 seed smashed 21 aces and 56 winners past his 33-year-old opponent on his way to a 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win on Margaret Court Arena.
After a slow start, Muller took the match up to Raonic in an entertaining third set and created a set point on his opponent’s serve.
But the veteran couldn’t convert the opportunity, the big-serving Canadian going on to finish the job in just under two hours.
In an impressive performance, Raonic didn’t lose a service game and recorded the tournament’s fastest serve to date — a 236km/h thunderbolt.
Raonic will meet 25th seed Gilles Simon in the third round, with the Frenchman accounting for Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva in straight sets.
In other action at Melbourne Park, No.15 seed Grigor Dimitrov made a shaky start against South Korea’s Hyeon Chung before prevailing 1-6 6-4 6-4 6-4. No.18 seed Richard Gasquet had no such troubles, the Frenchman muscling past Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-1 6-1 6-1 to set up a third-round encounter against Dimitrov.
