After taking care of Holger Rune in a three-set epic in the semi-finals, de Minaur looked down and out in the final before fighting back in classic fashion.

Paul raced away to claim the opening set before de Minaur fought back and levelled proceedings to send it into a deciding set.

Once the third set got underway however it was one-way traffic for the Aussie as he claimed the 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

The Aussie put the American to the sword and once he put his foot down, Paul couldn’t keep up with him as the final got away.

The win could now launch De Minaur into the top 20 rankings, giving Australia two men in the best 20 male players on the planet.

It gives De Minaur his seventh ATP victory.

“I might not play unbelievable tennis every day but I know I’m gonna fight to the end. I’ve got a whole lot of heart in this little body of mine,” he said after the win.

De Minaur booked his spot in the final after a blistering performance against world number 10 Holger Rune.

After dropping the first set the Aussie flipped the switch and snatched the momentum from his opponent as he claimed a tough second set before racing away in devastating fashion in the decider.

The nearly three hour contest didn’t affect the Sydneysider with his final against Paul coming only a day later.

“It feels great. It feels like I deserved it,” De Minaur said. “I hung in there, I stayed tough.

“It’s not easy because he’s a hell of a player. He was hitting me off the court at times and not letting me really do much. But I managed to save a couple of crucial break points and keep giving myself chances.”
