Western Empire returns to brilliant best with slashing victory in the Gold Rush at Ascot
Grand WA galloper Western Empire has capped off the Perth Summer Carnival with a powerhouse victory in the Group 3 Gold Rush.
A perfectly executed Billy Egan ride was the catalyst for ageless galloper Western Empire storming to victory in the Group 3 Gold Rush (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday for trainers Grant and Alana Williams.
Champion local hoop William Pike was meant to partner with the seven-year-old in the $1.5m showpiece but had to forego the ride during the week after breaking his wrist in a scooter mishap that will sideline him for at least six weeks.
With Pike sidelined, it was Billy Egan who was johnny-on-the-spot, securing the ride and then delivering an almost faultless performance to secure victory aboard the hometown hero.
From barrier 12 the task was never going to be easy, but Egan managed to find cover back in the pack and had his mount travelling, before letting down and unleashing his devastating trademark finish.
Magnificent Andy finished second 1 ½ lengths away from the winner while Super Smink, which had trouble finding clear galloping room for the second week running, got home late for third.
Western Empire’s Gold Rush victory took the grand galloper’s stake earnings past the $2m mark.
