Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout to appear at Stawell Cup meeting on Easter Sunday

Teenage athletics sensation Gout Gout is set to send crowd numbers soaring when he makes his first foray into racing at next month’s traditional Stawell Cup meeting on Easter Sunday.

Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout will add some off-track star power when he appears at Easter Sunday’s Stawell Cup meeting.

The 17-year-old, who has captured the imagination of Australian sports fans with his amazing performances over 100m and 200m, breaking Peter Norman’s 200m Australian record, which stood for more than 50 years.

Gout will be in Stawell to compete at the famous Stawell Gift athletics carnival, enabling long-time racing supporter Sandy McGregor to organise the Queenslander to appear at the Stawell Cup meeting.

Gout’s presence is set to boost crowd numbers at both the Stawell Gift and Stawell Cup events, providing another drawcard for the western Victorian town over the Easter weekend.

Stawell Racing Club manager Rachel Samsonenko was thrilled to confirm Gout’s appearance at the club’s biggest meeting of the year.

“Sandy (McGregor) is such a wonderful supporter of racing in the Wimmera area,” she said.

“He sponsors many clubs, his support of jumps (racing) is unwavering, he and his family give so much back to the industry”.

She said Gout would be on track presenting the trophy to the winners of the of the club’s traditional egg and spoon race, the Don Murphy Cup, for kids aged 12 and under.

“What a thrill to have Gout Gout on course, it’s so exciting for the club and our region to have a sprinting superstar added to our Cup day”, Samsonenko said.

“I’ve already had people in the community ask whether the rumours are true.

“When confirming the news, they want to buy a ticket to Cup day and the (Stawell) Gift, which is so good for the town”.

“It’s the biggest weekend of the year for Stawell, and the added star factor will bring more people to our Cup meeting, for sure”.

Samsonenko said the club initially budgeted for a crowd of 2000 for the Stawell Cup meeting but would revise its expectations in the wake of Gout’s confirmation for the meeting.
