Star jockey Jamie Kah could be back race riding next month after reaching a significant milestone in her recovery from a severe concussion.

Kah, who has successfully passed two neurological exams to be cleared for “light duties”, rode one horse in trackwork at Mornington on Wednesday morning.

The 27-year-old, who also attended Cranbourne the morning prior, is riding on a restricted trackwork license.

Kah must complete a “balance” neurological test next month to be eligible to ride in jumpouts, official trials and races again.

Kah is thrilled to be back pursuing her love for riding horses.

“It’s good to be back, it’s been a very hard few months and I’ve been looking forward to this for ages,” Kah told 7 Horse Racing.

“The last few weeks have been really difficult because I know in myself I feel normal, I feel back to myself and just not going to work and not riding horses, that’s been the hardest part.”

The Group 1 star sustained a severe concussion in an unfortunate race fall at Flemington on March 11.

Kah has made significant improvements the past six weeks.

“I feel 100 per cent, I feel like I’m back to myself and I feel like I’ve got a purpose again,” Kah said.

“Confidence is back to normal, I haven’t felt like I’ve missed a day.”

Kah’s potential return to the saddle next month would reignite the Melbourne premiership race.

She had ridden 59 winners before the concussion setback, about 20 more than her nearest rival.

With Kah sidelined the past three months, star jockey Blake Shinn has eroded the deficit to seven winners.

The last metro fixture for the 2022-23 season is on July 29.

Kah made history in 2020-21 as the first female jockey to win the Melbourne premiership. She also became the first jockey in 20 years to ride more than 100 winners (105) in a single season.

Kah was determined to win a second Melbourne premiership this season, prior to her concussion scare

“I wasn’t watching racing but I’ve been watching (premiership table) every day the last few weeks,” Kah said.

“I’m seven in front still, I think there’s about 11 metro meetings to go … so hopefully I can be back in a few weeks.

“It’s something that’s really important to me, I really wanted to win the premiership again this season.”
