Jockey Jason Maskiell will front the Victorian Racing Tribunal charged with failing to ride a horse on its merits at Seymour in November.

Racing Victoria stewards today issued a statement following the conclusion of their inquiry into Maskiell’s ride aboard My Schieller Wood in the Insuremyfleet Maiden Plate over 1600m at Seymour on November 15.

My Schieller Wood was beaten by 25.55 lengths, finishing 12 of 13 starters in a race won by the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Hawkins.

After obtaining evidence from all relevant persons, stewards issued one charge under AR129, which requires all jockeys to ride his or her horse to their merits.

Stewards allege that:

■ From approaching the 300m until approximately the 250m, Maskiell restrained My Schieller Wood and failed to improve his mount’s position between Just Riff Raff and Vidocq, when there was an opportunity to do so; and/or

■ From approximately the 250m until approaching the 150m, he restrained My Schieller Wood and failed to improve his mount’s position when there was an opportunity to do so; and/or

■ After Frontline Action shifted out in advance of his mount at approximately the 150m, he continued to restrain My Schieller Wood for the remainder of the race and failed to improve his mount’s position when there was an opportunity to do so.

An alternative charge – under the rule requiring jockeys to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure their horse is given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible placing – has also been laid.

The charges will be heard before the Victorian Racing Tribunal at a date to be fixed.
