Jockey Billy Egan keen to build on Foxy Frida record with Queensland raid

Group 1 jockey Billy Egan is eager to build on his remarkable record aboard tenacious mare Foxy Frida at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

It doesn’t matter where Foxy Frida runs, on what day, jockey Billy Egan wants to be on the back of the tenacious mare.

Foxy Frida, a standout $2.15 favourite with TAB in the $500,000 Magic Millions National Classic on Saturday at Eagle Farm, has won eight of 24 starts and more than $800,000 prizemoney.

The 1600m race on Saturday, apart from the first prize of $300,000, could go a long way towards Foxy Friday being back at Eagle Farm on June 24 for the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m).

Egan, who has won five races on Foxy Frida for trainer Andrew Noblet, including a last-start Group 3 success in Adelaide, jumped at the chance to join the mare in the Sunshine State.

“She’s been super for me,” Egan said.

“Good for her to score a Group win in Adelaide last start, hopefully, if she wins this (at Eagle Farm), they might look at the Tatt’s Tiara, but we’ll see how that all plays out after Saturday.

“Everything right, she wouldn’t be out of place (in a Tatt’s Tiara), you’d have a crack at it for sure.”

Egan’s trip has come sweeteners in the form of Nick Ryan-trained Munhamek in the Listed Spear Chief on Saturday at Eagle Farm and Brereton, for Peter Moody, in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes.

Fresh off winners at Mornington and Echuca this week, workhorse Egan has five rides at Pakenham on Friday ahead of the Queensland hit-and-run mission and a full book of rides at Geelong on Sunday.

The 33-year-old achieved a well-deserved personal milestone last month, winning the Group 1 South Australian Derby aboard Dunkel.

Celebrations for the breakthrough result were short-lived with everywhere man Egan straight back into work cycle.

“I’m definitely very happy to win one, I only had limited opportunities before and a lot of them placed, you just wondered if you would ever win one, or get another opportunity?” Egan said.

“It’s nice to get it done but I haven’t been able to (reflect), I just ride every day.

“It feels like it was a while ago now, I’ve been that busy working so hard since it’s happened, it was pretty much back to work, busy as usual every day since then.”
