Form expert Brad Waters runs his eye over Saturday’s meeting at Caulfield, finding five horses to follow and some to forgive from the card.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

SHAHAR (6th of 12, Race 1): The Amy and Ash Yargi-trained youngster trialled well leading up to her debut in which he drew the outside barrier. The draw forced jockey Daniel Moor to take Shahar to the back of the field where she raced wide. Shahar lost her way on the home turn and did plenty wrong in the straight before getting her act together and making late ground. She can improve significantly with race experience.

XARPO (1st of 10, Race 2): Horses that race near the speed and show plenty of fight are always worth following and Xarpo is one of those horses. The Simon Zahra-trained filly won a couple over the summer, including a race at Flemington, and returned with a game win in soft ground. Her racing style means she can win another race or two in the coming weeks.

HERBERT PARK (3rd of 12, Race 6): The Tony Noonan-trained mare stepped up in class at Caulfield on Saturday and didn’t have a lot of luck in the straight when beaten less than a length. She raced midfield to the home turn but raced tight for most of the straight before being crowded on the line. That was her second run this time in and looks ready to win on soft or heavy ground.

AMBERITE (4th of 12, Race 8): Amberite was another rising in class when he took on open company at Caulfield but he was far from disgraced. The Matt Laurie-trained five-year-old rolled to the lead but was no match for more talented rivals in the last 200m, fading to finish fourth. Saturday’s race was his third run in and he looks ready to win something a shade easier on rain-affected ground.

RHEINBERG (4th of 10, Race 9): The Lindsay Park-trained Rheinberg had every chance to win at Caulfield but finished fourth, a half length from the winner. However, he showed he was ready to break through again with his effort. He challenged the leaders early in the straight and looked set to draw clear but he peaked on his run in the last 100m second-up. He’ll be much fitter for that outing and can finish the job in the coming weeks.

PLEASE FORGIVE:

BETWITCHERY (6th of 10, Race 3): Betwitchery went down narrowly after leading at Sandown but was never a chance at Caulfield after racing at the back of the field. Betwitchery lost concentration in the gates and was slowly away, losing all winning chance. She’s worth another chance when she next appears.

JUST FOR SHOW (5th of 11, Race 4): Started as the $3.30 favourite but his backers were out of business soon after the start when Just For Show was slow to begin from a tricky draw. He was never going to win the race but might have finished a bit closer had apprentice Luke Cartwright decided to track through on the inside on the home turn.

THE BLACK CLOUD (2nd of 12, Race 6): The Black Cloud was a beaten $2.80 favourite but was far from disgraced. She pushed forward and worked to share the lead to the home turn before boxing on gamely in the straight until claimed by the winner Sixteen Reasons, who had a 3.5kg weight advantage.

BEHAVIOUR (2nd Race 2) – Held up from the 400m to the 200m.

ATTACHMENTS (Unp Race 3) – Vets examination revealed cardiac arrhythmia for the first time.

CHARMED RUN (Unp Race 6) – Awkwardly placed at the 600m & checked at the 200m when tightened for room.
