Trainer looks for initial city win

PROMISING three-year-old Dabamirak will be out to deliver Andrew Beswick his first city winner when he steps out at Morphettville Parks today.

PROMISING three-year-old Dabamirak will be out to deliver Andrew Beswick his first city winner when he steps out at Morphettville Parks today.

After a hat-trick of victories at Port Augusta, the Gawler trainer decided it was time to throw the Green Perfume gelding in the deep end after just five starts.

Dabamirak, who looks more like a stock horse at 15 hands, has kept stepping up when it matters, carrying 60kg in his on-pace win this month.

"He's just kept on improving," Beswick said.

"He's been winning well at Port Augusta and (jockey) Todd Pannell thought we should try him in town."

Beswick, who has four gallopers in work, has been training for four seasons.

He moved to the mainland from Tasmania "about eight or nine years ago", setting up a property at Sandy Creek and breaking in horses for different trainers around the state.

The 54-year-old has had a couple of handy ones go through the farm, educating Blue Diamond champion Undoubtedly and multiple Group winner Honalee.

"You always take a bit of interest in how they go, but it's not the same as training them," Beswick said.

"It's nice to cheer on one of your own."

Things have started to come together for Beswick, who has notched five winners and seven placegetters with his past 24 runners.

"Breaking in is the main business, but I'm always looking to get a few more youngsters in the stable,"

he said.

"I was going to give training away last year but we decided to have one last crack at it and it seems to be working out.

"Since January we've got on a bit of a roll - seems like we've finally worked out what we're doing."

TattsBet rates Dabamirak at $21 for the Brian Johns Memorial 0-75 Handicap (1000m), with Your Excellency ($3.40) and Avoid Lightning ($4.60) the popular picks.

But it doesn't worry Beswick.

"I'm getting a bit nervous already," he said.

"It'd be a great thrill to get my first city winner, but even if he runs midfield, I'll still be pretty happy."
