JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
Andrew Gibbons can raise his tally of 179 Taree winners by a few.
RACE 1: Maiden Handicap (1312m)
FUN IN TEXAS (6) has raced 12 times for a second and a third; that PB came as recently as last start when the Lyle Chandler-trained mare was a half-length runner-up in a 1400m Maiden at Armidale. Drawn 3, same jockey. Doncaster Avenue was scratched from Coffs Harbour on Monday to run here at home instead. Only had two runs, one at 1000m, the other at 1250m, both suggestive that he would appreciate stepping out over more ground perhaps.
BET: FUN IN TEXAS (6) to win, exacta 6 to beat 1.
GOLDEN SMILE (10) is a valuable broodmare proposition when the time comes as a daughter of Sea The Stars with broodmare sires Kingmambo, Unfuwain, Mr Prospector, Buckpasser, Round Table, etc. Top run first-up at Newcastle over 1400m; this is the perfect race for her today. JASON DARREN (7), a Widden-bred, $15,000 Adelaide Yearling buy, has placed at three of his four starts, two of those were at provincial level. CUP OF AMBITION (9) is costly but can figure.
BET: GOLDEN SMILE (10) to win, exacta 10 to beat 7.
CRAZY MIKKI (4) has been with Tony Ball for the last four of a total of seven career starts. The daughter of Mikki Isle has come back in great shape, that much is clear given that she has finished second at her only two runs this time in and both are at this same track and distance. RARE MOON (8), a granddaughter of NZ Group 1 winner Recurring, has been thereabouts in better maidens than this one. Gets her best chance yet (to win).
BET: CRAZY MIKKI (4) to win, quinella 4,8, box trifecta 4,5,7,8.
RACE 4: Class 1 Handicap (1412m)
POCKET EIGHTS (1) made a lot of money as a weanling; $175,000 at Inglis’s Melbourne Sale to be exact. The son of Impending has raced 10 times now for a win and three seconds. The majority of the unplaced runs were in fact, good runs, to varying degrees. Take note that Aaron Bullock steered the horse to his only win so far. SWEET PATRIOT (3) was bordering on unbeatable at Port Mac on march 11, hence the $1.33 SP and six lengths margin. Harder here but has obvious talent.
BET: POCKET EIGHTS (1) to win, quinella 1,3.
CASIRINA (2) is a grey son of Casino Prince bought, owned and for a long time trained by the living legend, Ross Stitt. Samantha McGuren has the training duties now and is ‘1’ and ‘2’ in only two starts. Saves his best for this track/distance and goes on anything. WANDJAD (10) is a 60 rater in a Benchmark 82 but is the up and comer of the field and is now two from two at home at Taree after the Feb 25 win. VEANDECHANCE (5) paid the price for her wide draw in a Highway.
BET: CASIRINA (2) to win, box trifecta 2,3,5,10.
RACE 6: Fillies & Mares Benchmark 58 (1007m)
LILY BOBTAIL (6) has 11 starts for a win, two seconds and two thirds. She had been racing without much luck in the few starts in between her Tamworth Maiden win in December and her last start distant second at Scone. She was always out there doing her best and hitting the line with purpose. THEDAYTHEMUSICDIED (8) has done a lot more right than wrong in 13 starts. Runner-up two from three at the track and distance, the same as her first-up record. Trialled well too!
BET: LILY BOBTAIL (6), THEDAYTHEMUSICDIED (8) e/w; quinella/exacta 6,8; DD 1st Leg 6, 2nd Leg 6).
RACE 7: Colts, Horses & Geldings Benchmark 58 (1007m)
ZOOM OUTCOME (7) has won four races; one time he beat Custo, another one he was too good for Lisztomania who’ll run in the Country Championships final in a couple of weeks’ time. It is also worth noting that all four of this gelding’s wins are at 1007m or thereabouts. On top of all that. he comes through two pretty high quality Benchmark 66’s. NAZARE’S IMPACT (8) has raced at this track and distance three times for a win and two seconds.
BET: ZOOM OUTCOME (7) to win (best bet).
RACE 8: Class 1 Handicap (1262m)
MAGGIE SPARKLES (6), a $900 online purchase, was $26 for no good reason when she resumed in a Class 1 here on March 17. She ran way, way better than her SP, so much so that her fourth of the 12 in the race was as good as any and better than most. CAPZINZI (1) is the highest-rated horse in the race yet gets in rather well now after the claim for Teighan Worsnop coupled with a desirable alley. GOLDEN DUBAI (4) is another highly consistent horse; placed to perform.
BET: MAGGIE SPARKLES (6) to win, quinella 1,6.
