Brad Waters’ Monday Racebook: Horses to follow from Caulfield on Saturday

Form expert Brad Waters analyses Saturday’s Caulfield meeting, revealing his horses to follow as well as three to forgive from the nine-race card.

Form expert Brad Waters runs his eye over Saturday’s meeting at Caulfield, pinpointing five horses to follow and some to forgive from the card.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

THANKS GORGEOUS (1-length 2nd of 12, Race 1): The Mark and Levi Kavanagh-trained filly raced at the back of the field before making ground on debut at Sandown before the stable decided on contrasting tactics at Caulfield. Jockey Fred Kersley sent Thanks Gorgeous to the lead from barrier 10 from where she gave a great sight. The smart Signature Scent was the only one to get by her late. She’ll improve again and should be harder to run down at her next outing.

SHARE THE STARS (3.2-length 5th of 8, Race 3): Punters thought Share The Stars had no business being at Caulfield, allowing her to start at $201 while she stepped up in class following a Ballarat Synthetic placing. However, the William Morissey-trained filly ran a much better race than her price suggested. She got back in the field and made ground in the straight to finish on the heels of the placegetters. There’s a race for her back at the provincials soon.

PROCEAN (0.4-length 3rd of 12, Race 5): Champion trainer Chris Waller might have a talented stayer in the form of Procean. He stepped up to 2000m at Caulfield after a midfield effort over 1600m in Sydney but acquitted himself well. The stable wanted to ride him closer to the lead but he was slow into stride and was chasing a long way out. He ran on well in the straight but was shaded by the promising Stop The Rock. There’s a win in him soon, possibly over 2400m.

EYE OF THE EAGLE (2.7-length 4th of 15, Race 6): Hadn’t raced for a month but made a pleasing return at Caulfield. He was up in class and didn’t much luck early as circumstances left him racing three-wide with cover throughout. As he was returning from a freshen, Eye Of The Eagle would have been entitled to tire in the straight but he stuck to his task well. He’ll be fitter for it and can pinch a 1400m race soon.

NEW YORK LUSTRE (1-length 2nd of 10, Race 8): The Enver Juufovic-trained mare has made rapid progress this season, going from a Benchmark 58 race at Seymour in December to a Benchmark 78 win in the space of three starts but stepped up to Group 3 level in the Sir John Monash Stakes. She started at $10 but did a terrific job, boxing on in the straight to finish only a length from the well-performed Sydney mare In Flight. There’s a Listed or Group 3 win in store for New York Lustre in the coming weeks.

FORGIVE

SHADHAVAR (2.1-length 5th of 12, Race 2): Sttarted as a $2.90 favourite after good recent jumpouts but just peaked on her run in the last 100m after racing on the speed at Caulfield. She’ll be much fitter for that outing and can repay punters in her next couple of runs.

XARPO (5.8-length 8th of 8, Race 3): The $2.90 favourite failed to beat a runner home but there were circumstances against her. Stewards queried jockey Ryan Houston’s ride on the Simon Zahra-trained filly, telling him he should have eased for cover at the 900m instead of pushing to race outside the leader. Xarpo was later found to have EIPH so can be forgiven for her Caulfield result.

AZTEC STATE (2.8-length 5th of 15, Race 9): Beaten favourite in the last race of the day but still did a good job to get as close as he did. Drawing barrier 15 left Aztec State racing back and wide to the home turn before he worked home soundly under 60kg to finish fifth. He can bounce back in the coming weeks.

STEWARDS SAY:

ROMANTICISM (8th, Race 1) – Pulled up lame in the near foreleg and had a poor recovery.

BETWTICHERY (4th, Race 3) – Hampered at the 100m by the eventual winner Illyivy.

SO SUAVE (Late scratching, Race 5) – Late scratching on vets advice after being kicked behind the barriers, sustaining swelling to the off-side girth area.

STOP THE ROCK (Winner, Race 5) – Raced three-wide without cover.

RHAPSODY CHIC (12th, Race 6) – Post-race vets examination revealed a throat conditions.

FREAK OF NATURE (15th, Race 6) – Raced keenly and raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.

EDISON (12th, Race 7) – Vets examination revealed EIPH.

KIN (5th, Race 8) – Held up when unable to obtain a clear run from the 500m to the 300m.

Rider Joe Bowditch suspended for 10 meetings after pleading guilty to a careless riding charge on Chakado in Race 9.
