TURF TALK: SYDNEY’S trainers give their take on the prospects of their best runners at Rosehill Gardens’s Christmas meeting on Saturday.
SYDNEY’S trainers give their take on the prospects of their best runners at Rosehill Gardens’s Christmas meeting on Saturday.
HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
RACE 1: TAB.COM.AU PLATE (1200m) 12.40pm
GARY Moore believes Happy Trails’ little brother All Too Huiying is primed to claim his first victory in the TAB.com.au Plate (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
“He looks fabulous, he worked well (on Tuesday) and he has put on body weight,” trainer Moore said.
“It’s a great draw barrier two and he should be able to park third or fourth.”
All Too Huiying was beaten less than a length behind Chauffeur at Rosehill on debut.
The scratching of Godolphin colt Coorg has opened the door slightly for Bjorn Baker’s Oenophile to make an impact at his debut.
Baker has given the Pierro youngster two recent trials though he concedes he hasn’t formed a firm opinion on where he stands at this stage of the season.
‘’He has been a bit slow to learn and he is a fairly laid back colt so he is hard to get a guide on,’’ he said.
‘’He is going fairly well and looks well but is probably going to have to improve on what he has shown us.’’
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Falconic $5-$4.40 ($1000 @ $5)
RACE 2: ATC MEMBERSHIP HCP (1400m) 1.20pm
Jaminzah will make his Sydney debut on Saturday but it wasn’t so long ago when Chris Waller wondered if the three-year-old colt would cut it as a racehorse.
Jaminzah backed up his solid second on debut in a Newcastle maiden with a dominant Kembla Grange Maiden win second-up, much to Waller’s surprise.
“We went to the races with no expectations and he trialled fairly and I said to the owners we are going to have to send him to the races and make a decision on his future because he hasn’t been showing us anything,” Waller said.
“His two race starts have been above what we expected.
“Last start he drew wide, sat three wide and won well.”
RACE 3: TAB REWARDS HCP (1800m) 1.55pm
Chris Waller has five of the nine runners in Saturday’s 1800m Handicap and has a “slight leaning towards Multifacets on form”.
“Multifacets has been very consistent and he was a winner and finished second at his last two starts and he has drawn well again,” he said.
“Vassal is coming back from 2400m which I think he failed out and I think he can improve.
“I’ve been disappointed with the way Cauthen’s Power is working and The Rumour File was good two starts ago and last start there wasn’t the same tempo in the race.
“Montauk is racing well and running thirds and fourths consistently.
“He has drawn nine but I don’t think it is a big hindrance for him and he will (settle) in the first four.”
RACE 4: HYLAND BOXING DAY SALE HCP (1350m) 2.30pm
Bonny O’Reilly may be ridden a touch quieter on Saturday as she bids for consecutive victories.
“I think she is better ridden a bit quieter and that’s an option,” trainer Bjorn Baker said.
“I’m really happy with her and I think up to 1350m will suit.
“She is a mare I have a lot of time for and it was good to see her win last time.
“With no weight and ridden by Brenton Avdulla again she will be a good chance.”
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Harlem Lady $7.50-$7 ($1000 @ $7.50)
RACE 5: TAB HIGHWAY HCP (1500m) 3.05pm
Artistic Beauty has been knocking on the door in the Highway races and trainer Cameron Crockett is hoping Saturday is her day.
“She has been in three Highways this time in and been beaten under a length in two of them,” Crockett said.
“I would have liked to have drawn a better gate (than 11) but she is a nice filly and she is really honest.”
RACE 6: JAMES BOAGS PREMIUM HCP (1500m) 3.40pm
Barrier 13 might be unlucky for some but not Classic Uniform, according to trainer Gary Moore.
“He is a lot fitter this time around and he has drawn gate 13 which is not a disadvantage for him because he is better off to go in late because he gets a bit fractious,” he said.
“He is a lot fitter this time around and I think he has had a good chance.”
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Gold Ambition $11-$8 ($250 @ $11, $400 @ $9.50, $1200 @ $8.50)
RACE 7: DECEMBER HCP (1400m) 4.20pm
Gerald Ryan is hoping a likely strong tempo plays into the hands of stablemates Bachman and Dances On Stars on Saturday.
“Bachman is going back (up) to 1400m for the first time in a while and he raced like he needed it at his last start,” he said.
“The other horse after the claim gets in with no weight on his back.
“It might be a tad short for Dances On Stars coming back from 1500m to 1400m but with speed upfront it will help him.”
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Snoopy $3-$2.60 ($500 @ $3, $400 @ $2.80, $2000 @ $2.70)
RACE 8: THERACES HCP (1350m) 5pm
Gerald Ryan won’t be surprised if Brewery and Star Wars are both in the finish.
“Brewery’s fresh form is all good but he needs a firm track,” he said.
“He was going to run at Scone last Friday but his trials have been really good and his work has been really good.
“Star Wars was good first-up and will improve off it and he is getting back to something like his journey.”
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Hand From Above $13-$8.50 ($200 @ $11, $500 @ $9.50, $400 @ $9.50)
RACE 9: TAB HCP (1200m) 5.40pm
Michael Hawkes told punters not to dismiss Elemenohpee in the last leg of the quaddie on Saturday.
“He will be competitive.,” Hawkes said.
“We’ve freshened him up and he has had a couple of hard runs going into it. He has drawn well.”
TURF TALK
BRAD DAVIDSON and SHAYNE O’CASS get down to the serious business of finding a winner:
Davidson: Come on, you’ve been spruiking one all week, so don’t go cold of me now.
O’Cass: Everyone thinks I have had too much Christmas cheer but honestly buddy, I reckon Esteban wins the last — it’s flying!
Davidson: John Sargent told me the 1200m will be too short for him earlier this week but I agree his trials have been eye-catching. At $15, you’ll be paying for the Christmas ham, prawns and beers if he salutes. I’m with Perfect Dare in the last- fourth up he looks ready to strike.
O’Cass: I reckon there’s been three great triallers that are racing on Saturday — Esteban, Invincible Knight in the last and OMG, did you see No Pushover at the Farm on Monday? Awesome.
Davidson: You do love a good trial Shayno but Blaike McDougall was very bullish about the chances of Invincible Knight first-up. I’m tipping Sir Plush to beat him though and he looks suited back in grade.
O’Cass: I saw your story about Pipeline in the Tele on Thursday. He’s a pretty underrated little horse. Oh and he beat Bratislava and Calanda last time, deep form that.
Davidson: Gerald Ryan is very happy with his progress and I think he will win again. Achi Baba the obvious danger. The two-year-old race interests me. Coorg was super on debut but he might have to go right back from gate 11.
O’Cass: I kind of like the Waller horse here, Tangled, who is bred to win a Derby but I think he can pull out a big one fresh. Speaking of Waller two-year-olds — From Within is a champion! It’s racing at Randwick on Monday and it will be the Magic Millions and Golden Slipper favourite after that race.
Davidson: The $26 quote for From Within in the Golden Slipper market might be good value the way you’re talking! I think the winner will come from either All Too Huiying or Falconic in the first. Slight leaning to Falconic.
O’Cass: The Highway is a good betting race again this week. I know Shutter Bug is ‘77’ this time in but with excuses. Shocking gate but she’ll do me at the big odds. You?
Davidson: I just think it sets up really well from Madame De Ban. I can’t go past Girl Sunday in race 4. I would love to own her and she is just a beauty!
O’Cass: Waller’s got five of the nine runners in the 1800m race and I hear you’re going against him? Brave!
Davidson: I know he hasn’t won for some time but Herne’s Oak trialled well recently and back to 1800m is the key. I reckon the $8 is a good price.
O’Cass: The December Handicap is the feature race, I am a Bachman man, man.
Davidson: I’m more a Snoopy guy. His last two wins have been outstanding and he overcame a brutal tempo at Flemington last start and still won.
O’Cass: Merry Christmas to you Davo and all the readers, hope Santa brings you all lots of winners!
Davidson: Just one winner would be nice Shayno. I think my last 20 bets have all been losers!
