Scott Brunton looks for The Inevitable to become latest All-Star champion at The Valley
Trainer Scott Brunton thought The Inevitable would be a Group 1 horse four years ago and he gets his chance to live up to that level on Saturday.
Trainer Scott Brunton has declared he won’t be seen for a month if stable star The Inevitable wins Saturday’s $5m All-Star Mile at The Valley.
The cult hero from Tasmania has won six on the bounce as he looks to step up against some of Australia’s best milers at his latest test.

With a stable name of Neville, Brunton says it’s extraordinary what the horse has been through to get back to racing at this type of level.

“With the injuries that he’s had and the time he’s spent away, I’ve just seen what he’s been through,” Brunton said.
“I looked at him every day over the back fence so I had a different type of admiration for him because I know what he has gone through.
“If one of these things happen to one horse they normally don’t race again so to come back and do what he’s done is incredible.
“If he does come out and win you will not find me for a month.
“He’s no champion, but he might be a Tassie champion and he’s my champion.”
“Neville” displayed the signs of a future star early on, winning the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes along with the inaugural edition of the Silver Eagle before things went pear-shaped in the Golden Eagle.
“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong that day. We were broken down on the Hume (Highway) getting there so it was just a disaster from the start,” Brunton said.
“If you asked me early on I thought he was a Group 1 horse, so is he going as good now? I don’t know but we’ll find out on Saturday.”
On paper the son of Dundeel has drawn a favourable barrier in gate three and while it looks as though he’ll be afforded a soft run, Brunton doesn’t want the 440kg gelding stuck between horses.
“He’s very small so I don’t want to be getting in the fight so that’s why he gets back a bit in his races,” Brunton said.
“I know those tactics aren’t the smartest tactics but it seems to work with him and he manages to run down whatever he has to run down.
“I’m under no illusions that the bar gets raised a lot but he’s one for one around Moonee Valley and he missed the kick but just torched them.
“He beat good horses that day and he got back to second last and got wide but just kept coming.
“He’s got a great ability to make ground around corners so it’s definitely an advantage to him around Moonee Valley.”
TAB rate The Inevitable as a $21 chance to win the All-Star Mile where Alligator Blood is the raging hot $2.80 favourite.
