Saturday racing comes to you today from Royal Randwick and Doomben. Here’s all the last minute tips and info from Daily Telegraph racing editor Ray Thomas.

ROYAL RANDWICK

Weather: Cool, partly cloudy day with chance of morning shower clearing to a fine afternoon with a forecast top temperature of 19c.

Track: Heavy (10)

Rail: 3m out

DOOMBEN

Weather: Mild, partly cloudy day with strong winds and a forecast top temperature of 22c.

Track: Soft (5)

Rail: 3m out

BE WARY: The Randwick track received more rain overnight and is now a heavy 10. The rail is out 3m from Wednesday’s meeting and with the track already chopped up near the inside, expect jockeys to steer wide towards the centre of the home straight. At Doomben, expect an upgrade from a soft 5 given the mild weather and strong winds in Brisbane. At recent meetings, most winners have come from off the fence at Doomben.

ROYAL RANDWICK

THE BEST BET: Alberto Magic (race 7) was a brilliant first-up winner at Rosehill two weeks ago, unleashing an impressive burst of acceleration to gap his rivals. Alberto Magic is unbeaten second-up, is back to his preferred 1100m trip, and he excels on rain-affected going. He’s solid at $2.50 and looks the winner.

THE NEXT BEST: Better Not Blue (race 2) was very unlucky first-up in the Gold Coast Guineas, powering home from near last to finish a close fourth to Nostradamus. He struck plenty of trouble in that race and really should have won. Given a month between runs, he goes to Randwick and 1400m today and it is worth noting he won second-up at Warwick Farm last preparation very convincingly on a heavy track. He will handle these track conditions at Randwick and looks very hard to beat.

VALUE BET: Villa Splendido (race 8) is in a very open fillies and mares but seems over the odds at $26. She resumed with a good fifth to Sense And Reason at Rosehill two weeks ago and will be improved by that run. She handles heavy track conditions and gets in with only 51.5kg after the apprentice’s claim.

THE WHISPER: Sense Of Occasion (race 6) chased home a very smart galloper in Silverball in the Lord Mayors Cup over 2000m at Rosehill two weeks ago. His form has been very good since a let-up and he goes to 2400m fourth-up. He was placed at his only previous start at this trip and although he has never been exposed to a heavy track, he has never missed a place in four soft track starts including two wins. Drawn to get the run of the race and he makes a lot of appeal.

DOOMBEN

THE BEST BET: Bohemian Lily (race 7) scored a tough win in the Gold Coast Bracelet then last start she rallied gamely under pressure and only just went under to the talented Ballet Suite in the Princess Stakes last start. Ballet Suite has been scratched which makes Bohemian Lily a stand-out selection in The Roses. Back Bohemian Lily with confidence.

NEXT BEST: Blueberry Hill (race 6) has won three 0of her only four starts and probably should be unbeaten. Bounced back from her fast finishing second to Big Tree in the Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast by again unleashing a powerful late burst to win the Champagne Stakes from Wicked Intent. The 1350m trip will suit this filly and she should be in the finish again.

VALUE BET: Lucky Lago (race 4) drew wide and raced without luck when fifth to Tales Of Grimm in the Scone Cup eight days ago. She has been slightly disappointing in her four starts this campaign but today she has drawn barrier one on a firming race surface. She will get the run of the race and is ready to return to her best form.

THE WHISPER: Hvasstan (race 1) has been improved by two runs from a spell and there is a big push for him today. He caught the eye last start coming from last on the turn for a close fourth tol Betwhatyouwannabe at Doomben last start. Hvasstan will appreciate getting out to 2020m and this isn’t a strong race. Ready to win.
