Race experience and natural talent are the two key drivers indicating an early career win for the well-bred three-year-old San Paulo, who is one of two Bathurst-bound gallopers from the Jarrod Austin camp.

San Paulo trialled four times for original trainers Peter and Paul Snowden without racing.

Now housed at Warwick Farm, San Paulo made his long waited debut at Nowra on December 5 finishing down the order but ‘only’ four-lengths off the winner Cinque Torri who won again nine-days later at Orange.

‘’He was quite green in trials and still has a fair bit to learn so it was more of an educational run to get him in amongst them and teach him what it is all about and we achieved that,’’ Austin says.

“He has come through the run in good order. I thought his lead-up work and his trials have been quite solid enough to suggest he will be very competitive.’’

San Paulo drew favourably at Nowra, not so this time having been dealt the widest barrier in the Pearce’s Lithgow Furniture And Bedding Maiden (1400m).

‘’He will roll forward from that outside gate and hopefully take up a much more forward position than what he did at Nowra,’’ Austin said.

‘’Out to the 1400m will be a big plus for him also.’’

San Paulo shares the same colours as 2020 Ramornie Handicap winner Signore Fox and the family-tree of our current Horse of the Year, Verry Elleegant.

Both San Paulo and Verry Elleegant’s fifth dam is none other then Eight Carat herself.

Partnering San Paulo on the float from Warwick Farm to Bathurst on Monday is the Rothesay gelding, Timperley.

Timperley has managed to win just two of his 24 starts but has placed 10 times.

Like his younger stablemate, Timperley has also fared badly vis-a-vie the barriers, coming up with 12 out of 14, minus scratchings.

‘’He will need a little bit of luck obviously around Bathurst from that barrier but I am very happy with him,’’ Austin said.

“His work has been great. His trials have been good and he is more than up to this level.

“He will definitely be hitting the line strongly.’’
